AMG started off as an independent engineering and tuning company, focussing on the customisation of Mercedes-Benz cars. In the early years, customisation meant that basically anything could be done and nothing was considered impossible. A pre-Mercedes factory era AMG is a truly unique car; no two vehicles are the same. The early AMG cars primarily received optical modifications; performance upgrades gained popularity in the 1980's.
The Mercedes 450SLC AMG that we have on offer is one of these individualised custom-ordered cars. Park it next to a standard C107 SLC and be amazed by the many different details in which the cars differ; both subtly and less subtly.
Starting off with a complete AMG body kit (front and rear spoiler, sill covers, fender flares and a rear trunk lid spoiler), the exterior was ordered in a two-tone metallic green custom paint job. Matching green 16 inch alloy Ronal wheels and a custom green leather interior add unity to the car's outspoken presence. Other desirable options include a sunroof, headlight wipers and washers, grille and windscreen wiper arms painted in body colour.
The interior differs from the standard SLC in many ways. Most prominently by a bespoke Giugiaro steering wheel, custom trim panels and a first aid kit compartment behind the rear bench. Front and rear seats are covered with green leather, generally in good condition but with some repairable wear on the driver's seat. A modern stereo is fitted, with JBL speakers. The antenna is mounted on the left front fender, instead of the rear fender on a normal SLC. Power windows were not on the option list; the first owner probably preferred a manual window mechanism.
Technically, we assume that the car was ordered with a factory original powerplant, linked to a standard automatic transmission. The rear axle is a specific AMG unit however, and the car sits on firmer lowered springs.
Having recently benefited from extensive service and repair work, this Mercedes is in well-serviced condition and runs and drives excellently. It received new filters and fluids, a fuel system cleaning, brake service and new Continental tyres. Current odometre listing is 115.493 km. The 450SLC was equiped with an LPG system (with a valve train lubrication unit) in the past, which is still fitted. It starts on regular petrol and quickly switches over to LPG. The tank sits in the boot area and the filler neck is located behind a foldable rear license plate.
The body is generally in very presentable condition, with some minor cosmetic imperfections. On the underneath there are no signs of damage. A couple of old repairs to the front floor panels are visible, profesionally done and holding up well.
With early pre-Mercedes era cars being rarer than hens' teeth, this is an excellent opportunity to own a piece of AMG history.
