1980 300TD TD 300 W123 Mercedes-Benz Wagon. Rare. Original. Ex. Condition. NO RESERVE.
I am selling my Mercedes-Benz 1980 300TD. It is original, save for repairs and replacements. This hard-to-find car is a head-turner. You do not see many of these. The body color is “Desert Tan.” The interior is the sought-after “Palomino.” Bottom line upfront: The car, mechanically, is in excellent condition. I’d rate the interior as Very Good to Good. I’d rate the exterior Very Good to Good as well. (Again, it is original and 38 years old.)
I have had much done since I bought the car from its California owner. Because the previous owner did not use the heat or air, I had both rebuilt. The heat is toasty while the a/c is frigid. The rebuilt engine has 80,000 miles on it. (Work performed under previous owner.) The odometer shows 374,847, though you’d never know it. Aside from the heat, air conditioning, and engine, the rebuilt transmission has just 200 miles on it. The car has new glow plugs, a new starter, and new muffler and exhaust among replaced items. Rear brakes were just replaced in preparation for sale. I had an engine block heater installed for extra cold starts (well-below freezing) but have not had to use it. There is a new motor in the driver's side door for the power windows. The battery is about a year old.
The car runs and runs. And runs. It floats at 35, 55 or 85 mph. The Mercedes suspension balances the car as if it were brand new. MPG – a wonderful 30/32. (This is a diesel.) It is great not having to fill the car often.
I took the car to my mechanic before offering it for sale. I put another $1,000-plus in it. It is ready for its next home.
Again, overall, I rate the engine and all mechanical items as Excellent.
Interior. I replaced the cracked dashboard (California sun) with another 1980 300 TD dash. I have the original dash if you’d like to have that as well. I have mint replacement (1980) map cases for the driver and passenger doors. (Photo) Other than that, the interior remains untouched. The leather seats have darkened with time, but are comfortable and supple. No rips. Piping intact. The arm rest between the two front seats shows cracking in the leather. There is some shrinkage/cracking on interior vinyl window trim (see photos). There is a nick in the wood paneling. Some of the carpeting has discolored with age, the most obvious is in the very rear. (Photos) Again, it is all original and I rate the interior as Very Good to Good. (Note, there is a manual sunroof. Works well. No leaks.)
Body. Original paint. Looks great. Close up, you may see some fading that did not show when photographed. There are paint tough-ups. There is a crack in the center of the front bumper, pictured. Nothing I’d replace. The body is strong and ramrod straight. Tires have thousands of miles left on them. I'd rate the body Very Good to Good.
Aside from the three map cases, I am including the old dash, a stack of floor mats, a black dash cover, the original booklets and manual, an ignition key and a door key.
Why sell? I have gone back and forth on this, but I don’t drive the car. As you hear people say, a car needs to be driven.
My 300TD is for sale elsewhere, so I reserve the right to end this auction early if it sells. The buyer must arrange for shipping if that is his/her choice. I am happy to work with shippers. Local pick-up is an option. Again, there is no reserve and my pricing is well within the parameters listed in several industry guides.
Serious buyers are welcome to send a mechanic to inspect the car, at their expense. (Note, the car has that new muffler "chortle." I will not be driving it while it is for sale.)
I have additional photos that will not fit within ebay's limit.
Terms. One thousand to me via PayPal within 48 hours after the close of the auction. The remaining funds must be to me within seven days after the close of the auction. I will release the car once the funds have cleared in my account.
Car sold "As Is." All sales are final.
Thanks for looking.
