1979 Jeep CJ Additional Info:
Here is an amazing opportunity to own a very rare and desirable, classic Jeep CJ7, Renegade. I purchased this from the 2nd owner in 2014. It was named, "Betty Blue", by the original owner, I feel it is an appropriate name and the potential new owner should know what to call her.. ;) It has been a prized possession of 2 previous owners.. And myself. It has only accumulated 51,000 and some change. It is very difficult or impossible to document such mileage as original, but I can tell you, it is pretty obvious when looking at it and hearing about it and seeing pictures from the 2nd owner. It still retains it's original paint and has lived in a garage from the beginning. It is currently lurking in my garage..
1979 was a great year for the classic CJ Jeeps, and if you're lucky enough to find a Renegade model, that meant your Jeep was optioned with power steering, power brakes, a tachometer, a clock, (probably other less noticeable features), and of coarse the awesome decal package! This one was blessed with the best drive-train option offered.. the 304V8 with the T-18, 4 speed transmission.. with a super low "granny" first gear. And did NOT come with the curse of "quadra-trac"! It has never been lifted, altered, abused, or otherwise "screwed with". This is the genuine article folks.. In BLUE!
The motor recently received an ignition tune up, rebuilt carb, various new hoses, new aluminum radiator, new exhaust (had the original on it when I bought it), new fuel tank hoses, new clock and a stereo.. Almost all the fluids have been changed. I also put on newer 31" BFG A/T's.. .At which time, I noticed one of the brake rotors was grooved. The brakes work great, but I intended to replace that grooved rotor.. So, I bought everything, new rotors, pads, hoses.. and I think calipers. Again, it stops just fine right now, and I can't even tell one of the rotors has grooves in it. Previous owner told me it had a recent clutch.. I presume its first.
The Jeep runs, drives, shifts and stops so well.. it's hard to believe.. it's a Jeep! It does not smoke, run hot, or have any unusual noises that I can detect anywhere. It does have great power, smooth power, even at incredibly low rpm.. It will pull from 15 mph in 3rd gear.. smoothly.. effortlessly. It runs perfect. Really sweet motor.. Sounds amazing too.. Not glass pack, obnoxiously loud.. But the neighbors or the guy next to you at the light, will know there is a v8 under the hood. I have not done any real 4 wheel drive trails. I certainly intended to.. And will if it doesn't sell. I have engaged the hubs and transfer case to verify it is working correctly. This thing would crawl over anything with the crazy low gearing.
The body is incredibly straight and free of damage and any serious rust.. And, most impressively, it retains it's original blue paint from the factory. Still looks great. Gets looks non-stop. The original "Renegade" decals were wearing thin, so I had them replaced, professionally.. $600. The factory paint is still shiny and in great shape, but is wearing thin in some areas, most notably, the leading edge of the hood. I didn't plan to touch it. There is a small area where rust was trying, in the usual place, under the embossed Jeep insignia.. I removed the interior seats and stripped the entire interior floor area and the back side of the embossed Jeep area and coated it with POR15, an amazing product designed just for this application. There was a small area on the passenger side floor, approx 3"x3" that I cut soft metal out of and welded a small patch in. There is some pitting in the floors from rust starting. The metal is very strong and I am confident there will never be any further rust issues now that the floors have been stripped and coated with POR 15. I then re-sprayed the entire floor areas with factory matched paint. I re-painted the very top of the tub, the part the hardtop comes into contact with, as it was quite chipped/scraped from taking the top on and off. Original hardtop is included and is in great shape.. It is white, and could stand to be re-sprayed. I think it has some rust around the rear lift gate handle. I know almost all of them succumb to rust there.. Can't recall for sure. I took the top off when I first got it and it's been off since. Betty Blue lives in the garage and prefers to be topless. I also, cleaned and applied POR15 to some of the underside and various underside seams, including under and around the battery and down in the low corners of the back sides of the front fenders.. This is a preventative measure and will stop rust from forming. I had planned to top coat those areas with factory matched blue paint. A can of mixed paint comes with it.
The interior.. well, there isn't a lot to them.. But, the door panels, dash and seats are original and in great shape.. for being a part time, topless vehicle and being 35+ yrs old. I found new denim fabric online.. after a lot of searching, and this was going to be the next upgrade. It's cool to see it in its original form tho. At some point, likely early on, someone built an arm rest/console between the front seats.. This is a nice touch! Glove box is intact Glass is all great. Accessories are working.. All factory gauges work. The only thing that comes to mind is the turn signal switch has a crack in the plastic housing.. The signals work fine, but for a right hand turn, you must hold the lever in place. Not a big deal.
All in all.. This is my dream Jeep.. and I can't believe I am listing it for sale. Garage space is a premium here and I just don't drive it much.. Sure love it when I do tho! Like a coiled spring.. Betty Blue is anxious and ready for adventure.
