1983 Jeep Wrangler Additional Info:
Only 4k miles on rebuilt original motor and transmission, fresh paint, almost completely rebuilt!Only 2500 CJ7 Limiteds were made between 1982 and 1983, making this particular model extremely rare. In this condition, there are probably only a handful left. The Limited came with a hard fiberglass top, high back bucket cloth seats, tilt wheel power steering, power brakes, padded roll bar, air conditioning, and am/fm radio. This one has all those original options, in working condition, plus more.I'm the 2nd owner. I was given this Jeep at 183k miles a couple of years ago when the owner died. The engine and transmission were both rebuilt, following mods/fixes/repairs made, and jeep was repainted,. It was driven daily until very recently. I did my best to keep it original. All matching serial numbers. Here's what you're getting:- Interior Monstalined original color, exterior repainted with original color enamel. I didn't reapply the original pinstriping. All other equipment (door interiors, seats, console) cleaned and reinstalled. There is a wear spot in the drivers seat and some aging, otherwise good condition. The original carpeting could not be saved, but I kept the original tailgate pad and a section of the original blue carpet for a color sample. Carpet can be reinstalled over the Monstaliner, if desired. No modifications to the cab were made.
- Original engine AND transmission professionally rebuilt with 4k miles since rebuild.
- Carter carb replaced with a Redline Weber 32/36 progressive and requisite fuel pressure regulator. The original carburetor, computers, associated wiring, and associated parts were removed and trashed.
- New fuel tank, straps, sending unit, and hoses connected correctly for Weber.
- The original ignition system was replaced with a new HEI distributor with internal coil.
- Alternator and starter rebuilt.
- Master cylinder, booster, rear wheel cylinders, front brake lines, and all rotable/serviceable brake parts replaced or serviced.
- Air conditioner compressor/filter/evaporator valve replaced and charged, AC is cold.
- Original brass radiator rodded out, painted, and reinstalled.
- New aluminum heater core (original brass comes with purchase, it's rebuildable)
- All new belts/hoses, stainless steel exhaust system (minus catalytic converter which is no longer required in TX due to vehicle's age).
- Front wheel bearings replaced, differential and transfer case serviced, all inspected and in good condition, no unusual or excessive wear.
- New Hancook tires (still under warranty from Discount Tire), original wheels painted black instead of original grey (my only deviation from the original color scheme), original trim rings (perfect condition until Discount Tire reinstalled them, now have some dings)
- Comes with period-correct Ramsey winch (solenoid, switch, and cable not included).
- Original rear seat has been reinstalled. It was modified by PO for some reason. Although it looks original and is in good shape, the back is now removed by lifting straight up on it. I don't know how it originally operated.
- Original windshield frame was replaced with an aftermarket, along with new gasket and glass.
- Original window rubber and guides were replaced.
- Many more new parts were involved in the rebuild and a comprehensive spreadsheet is available with part numbers, links and costs. All receipts and records, including original factory manual, two service manuals (well-used, poor condition), original winch receipt, and all receipts for rebuild are included.
- Clean Texas title.
This is not a frame-off rebuild, there are imperfections.
- There was some rust under the back passenger rollbar mount on the passenger side and a 3-4" spot on the front right quarter panel that was fixed with bondo. The drive floor was rusted through and replaced with sheet metal. Otherwise it was spared the usual rot often found on jeeps of this era.
- The paint job is great, but not perfect. There are a few small imperfections.
- The white paint on the upper side of the lower doors is just Rustoleum enamel to keep that part from rusting.
The list of what still needs doneand/or issues (as far as I know) is short, fairly simple, and cheap.Although this is a comprehensive list to the very best of my knowledge, there may be more that you find of which I'm unaware, forgot to include, or, in your judgement, should be addressed.- u-joints, although working, need replaced (new ones come with purchase)
- spring and body bushings rubber is worn/aged (new ones come with purchase)
- reverse sensor in transmission needs replaced so jeep will only start in park or neutral and reverse lights work (new one comes with purchase)
- gas gauge works but is not accurate, needs calibration.
- the alternator mounting is slightly off-plane and needs shimmed. This causes the belt to squeal for a short time on startup.
- there is no step-up solenoid for the AC. Although it runs well, the AC will cause enough drag on the engine that a step-up solenoid would be nice. Because the original carburetion system was replaced, this will require a solenoid, a little engineering, and splicing into the power wire for the compressor.
- The AC compressor is currently wired directly to the battery with an inline fuse. This should be wired to a keyed power source.
- The rear window frame has a metal bar installed under the hinges, as seen in pictures. The PO had made many mods for totally unapparent reasons, including one (since fixed with correct parts) that lifted the rear window higher than it normally would. I have no idea if the bar facilitated that or why this particular mod was made. There doesn't appear to be any damage to the rear frame to justify it. I never took it apart, so I can't speculate. Until this is restored to its original configuration, the rear window frame will leak some.
- The "emergency brake on" light just started staying on, even when the brake is off. This is keyed off a switch on the emergency brake lever, but I haven't troubleshot it yet.
