1972 GMC Jimmy Resto-Custom
Up for sale is a 1972 GMC Jimmy Restoration / Custom. The theme of this vehicle build was to be as original in appearance and style as possible while gaining modern day reliability, safety, and comfort.
Throughout the process great attention way given to using quality products and materials. A true frame off professional restoration was completed, and nearly everything is new or upgraded. The classic look and feel of the 1969-1972 Blazer / Jimmy has been well retained in the process. The engine is a modern day 5.3L Chevrolet with a 4 speed Overdrive automatic transmission. The original NP 205 transfer case and front and rear axles were rebuilt and resealed.
Exterior:
The Jimmy was painted the factory original paint color, 1972 Ochra (sometimes called Mustard). Paint job is very high quality profession multi stage application. I would say it is not show quality but close. Much time was spent in rust proofing the now 100% rust free body. I am told there was only surface rust to begin with and no extensive body work appears to have been done. Extensive under body treatment and sealing has been completed. POR 15 has been used. The end result is a very well done exterior restoration including the decals and chrome.
Frame:
The frame was completely stripped down and media blasted. It was refinished with proper preparation and rust sealed with POR 15.
Interior:
The interior restoration includes all new OE style door panels, trim panels, rear cargo finish panels, custom interior spare tire mount, Original Air Vintage Air Conditioning and Heating System, Original dash (not re-done, very clean and un-molested vintage original), Later model GM front bucket seats with 3 point safety harnesses, later model GM rear bench seat with 3 point safety harnesses, all new vinyl flooring, and a new Softopper complete soft top. Safety and simplicity were paramount in designing the interior, with much comfort added by the heat and air conditioning system.
Drivetrain:
2005 GM 5.3L Vortec V8. This is (I believe) an L59. 295 HP rated, 335 lb/ft torque cast block aluminum head GM. Common parts are easy to find for a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban. Mileage on the engine and transmission at the time of install has 20,000. Odometer in the Jimmy was set to match drivetrain miles to the engine.
The transmission is from the same 2005 GM vehicle, it is a 4 speed automatic with tow/haul overdrive. Transmission operation is perfect. The Jimmy is really quick on its feet, and has plenty of towing power if needed.
The NP 205 transfer case (legendary for it’s strength) was rebuilt and retained. Both front and rear axles were rebuilt and retained, (Dana 44 Front, GM 12 bolt rear) but the front has been upgraded to disk brakes. Axles were fully rebuilt and re-sealed.
Suspension and Steering:
Suspension System has been completely replaced with BDS Suspension 2” Lift System front and rear. This includes all new leaf springs, bushings, shackles, hardware, and steering correction components. All steering and suspension is very tight, and alignment is perfect. Ready to drive anywhere. Please note, the ride is firm, as all leaf sprung vehicles are, but is very solid and predictable even at 80 MPH.
Brakes:
Brake system is all new. Pressure boosted master cylinder is a great improvement to the safety and drive-ability of this vehicle. With the Disc brake conversion it stops fast, stops straight, and doesn’t tend to sway or roll whatsoever.
Electrical:
Upgrades have been made to the vehicle starting and charging systems, battery, and stereo. A high output alternator keeps all the electronics happily fed. The heating and Air Conditioning system is a blessing for four season driving, and all four passengers will stay comfortable.
Details:
The original wheels and chrome beauty rings have been retained for nostalgia sake and the true vintage OE look. The 2” lift can easily accommodate a 33” tire if you chose too. The Jimmy includes original 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 GMC Jimmy and Chevrolet Blazer sales materials. An original owners manual is included.
Driving Experience:
Any one, any Woman, any Man, will love the ride and drive of this Classic Vintage 4x4. Any GM lover will respect it’s authenticity. Any auto enthusiast will respect it’s customization. Everyone will appreciate it’s clean emissions, easy starting, powerful driving and classic cruising. I would let anyone in my family drive it anywhere without hesitation. This build is tested and approved by 10,000 miles of solid road travel.
I can’t imagine a better truck for the price. I would let my wife drive it across country today without hesitation. Beware, there are others out there that are nice build, but have not proven the road miles, not been tested, not corrected. This is not a Brand New Build! This Jimmy has been driving daily, all quirks are worked out. It is ready for adventure!
Final Notes:
If you are considering a classic vintage 4x4, a resto-custom that is well done can be really fun and reasonably priced. Consider the cost of a new F-150, this vintage mod vehicle will hold it's value for as long as you care for it.
