1972 GMC Jimmy. I bought this rig off of EBAY 2 1/2 years ago. I will start with saying that I did not get what I thought I was buying. It was my first time buying a "classic car" and my first time buying something without seeing it first. I hired an "inspector" and paid him his money. His "report" came back pretty much perfect. That was a joke. I have come to the conclusion that the seller must have paid him more than I did to give me a good report. Well, I bought it and then paid a fair amount to get it trucked from halfway across the country. When I got it, let's just say it wasn't what I was expecting.
Well, 2 1/2 years later and a lot of time and money,I nowhave what I thought I was getting. I have had many things done to this Jimmy to make it right and good.
Complete enginegone through(seals, gaskets, some wiring, all fluids, spark plugs etc., etc., etc...this 350 was maybe the only thing the inspector didn't lie about, as I had a very good mechanic tell me it is very strong), transmission rebuilt, rear-end rebuilt, drive lines rebuilt, radiator rebuilt, suspension upgrades (Bilstein Shocks), all new body mount kit installed, complete new exhaust (Magnaflow), undercarriage professionally steam cleaned (NO, I did not paint it...I am not trying to hide anything and NO, this was not a frame-off), new core support, new front fender wells.
New bumpers (LMC), restored original grill, new American Racing wheels, new BFG All Terrains (33's). I have the original spare tire rack that mounts on the passenger side/tailgate and it has been sprayed withLinex and looks amazing. I don't have itmounted and don't have a spare. Holes are still in the truck on the side and tailgate where it mounts (I never mounted it or bought a full size spare tire/wheel because it wouldn't have fit in my garage).
Interior I have done a lot. When I got the truck the previous owner had laid Home Depot style indoor/outdoor carpet in the entire truck and glued it directly to the metal with what appeared to be some industrial strength glue (be aware, the carpetlooked great on Ebay). Needless to say, that was a nightmare to remove. Once I finally got all of the seats (which were held in by self-tappers...not joking) and the carpet taken out I got the nice surprise of rust (another thing the inspector said it had none of). So I started to grind and sand...and grind and sand. Once I had the entire truck back to cleanmetal I hired a guy who fixed all of the rust holes in the entire bed (and yes, it was done right...welded, no bondo) and then painted (black). I did not do the cab because there was no holes and not nearly as bad as the bed, and truthfully if someone wanted to, they could justinstall an entire new floorpan. So, all rust was removed from inside of the truck and it turned out great. I then laid down Dynamat Extreme throughout the entire truck. From there I put in an entire new realcarpet kit (LMC) in. I also installed a center console (LMC), retro radio with Ipod hookup, fixed/replaced all gauges, replaced every bolt for seats and seatbelts withgrade 8 hardware, put a new dash bezel in (LMC), new glove box (LMC) and finally a new "original" steering wheel.
So, some of the things that the last owner did during his "restoration" that are not right. This guy put a new trim kit on and only used the proper clips on one piece, the rest is held on by self-tappers. You can't really notice but I wanted to disclose it. He also had new door skins welded on before he had it painted and the driver side door skin was not welded on great so when the door is shut, it is not a perfect line. There is also a chip (pinky size) under the gas tank fill that has been "touched up" and is noticeable if you look at it.
I do have the original hardtop and it is black with sliding side windows. I will be honest, it needs some love. I took it off the truck the day I got it and have never put it back on.
I am now going to give an honest 1-10 rating on some different parts of the truck.
Engine (how it runs) - 8.5
Engine (looks) - 6.5
Overall Paint - 8
Overall Body - 7.5 (rocker panels & driver side door skin aren't perfect)
Overall Interior - 8.5
Undercarriage (looks) - 6.5
Bottom line, this is now a beautiful truck that runs great, is very reliable and was done right. It will not win any shows but it will turn heads anywhere you go and get you anywhere you want to go. If you have any questions or want any more photos of anything just let me know and I will do my best to answer them or get them to you.
