1987 Ford Mustang GT Hatchback
Here at Classic Auto Mall we never know what's going to come through the door next and every now and again we get a car that is a jaw dropper... so now we give you on consignment, and could be yours a 1987 Fox bodied Mustang GT with a fresh paint job and pinstriping, a redone cooling system, the venerable 5.0 liter V8 and a manual transmission and those iconic T-Tops, and all buttoned up, well maintained, and simply marvelous to behold. Nearly like new, way back from 1987! Read ON!
Exterior
Paint code 9L adorns this car and in layman's language this translates to Oxford White. The paint is near perfect and is a recent respray covering straight steel sculpted panels which make up this iconic iteration of the Fox bodied Mustang. It does not get any better than this with excellent minded gaps, perfecto straight rust-free panels, and clear plastic headlights and taillights, excellent lower body and rocker flanges, and a sexy sloping hatchback that culminates with a aerodynamic rear spoiler. T-Tops, (the final full year of production for this option as in the 1988 model year the T-Top option was canceled in October), and all badging denotes the 5.0-liter mill that sleeps below the hood...shhhhhhhh, you'll awaken the beast! Black accents with door handles, window surround trimmings, and a red pinstripe within the lower body cladding contrast to the Oxford and shows off the car as it should. Cheese grater wrap around rear tail lighting is perfectly placed above the integrated body matching bumper. 15-inch Weld DragLite wheels are on all 4 corners, and are wrapped by nearly new 215/70R15 blackwall radials.
Interior
The mid 1980's brought us some wild stuff, but then there were highlights like the interior of this classic sly Fox with door panels in gray with black control panels, black accent panels and black door handles and switches. This continues for the seating with gray high back cloth buckets, sporting tuck and roll tweed inserts and smooth racing style wrap around bolsters. These seats have power lumbar controls so you can get it just right baby bear and show with some light staining that should clean up easily enough. A clean gray plastic console races past toward the dash and has an arm rest which doubles as the console storage lid. Some black accent panels, toggles for the power mirrors, an intact and functional ashtray door, and the shifter are inserted into the gray and black as it makes its way to the dash. On the dash we have a mixture of lower gray dash front panels which match up to the door panel line, and above padded gray dash top. Extensive use of the mid 1980's square and rectangle design is used for the dash, with all controls and gauges in either of these simple geometric forms. The dash is pristine, as are the carpets which float all seats in a perfect sea of gray thick pile comfort. Gray side panels on the rear frame a rear 2 plus 2 bench which is shoehorned into the back of the car, but is comfortable once you get there.
Drivetrain
An original 5.0 Liter V8 with EFI is the heart and soul of this pony as it rests in a lightly patinaed and unrestored engine bay and we are ready to take on some serious stuff. A Tremec T5 5-speed manual transmission is now installed on the back, and this pushes power back to a Ford 8.8-inch 2.73 geared rear axle featuring TracLoc. Our consignor has treated this 5.OH to a new water pump, thermostat, hoses, belts and an aluminum radiator, nicely done, just the way we like it.
Undercarriage
Some slight surface rust on the usual suspects, but certainly unremarkable and mostly straight unadulterated gray and white structurally sound steel unibody, floor pans and rockers. A fairly new exhaust system snakes its way rearward and features H piping and dual Flowmaster mufflers which are fed by factory headers now on the block. Independent coil springs for the front suspension, and 4 link with coil springs for the rear, along with power disc brakes upfront and power drums for the rear are seen underneath in this clean environment.
Drive-Ability
It's not every day one gets the opportunity to drive a T-Top Mustang from 1987 so my decoder/test driver/copy editor/cohort and I both took the opportunity and we found a quick starter, smooth runner, and a test track ace with plenty of power, great handling, and good brakes which stopped the car in a straight line. It also was an excellent cruiser and produced a nice melodious sound with the exhaust. All controls were working perfectly, save for the gas gauge and AC that was blowing warm. The buckets grab you in a tasteful way, and everything is within easy reach while driving.
Minty is a word not oft seen T top cruiser and is certainly the word of the day for the exterior of this car. A little TLC on the interior to bring it up to full show quality and a solid undercarriage are extra plusses for this Fox. Lots of life left in this one, and it's a classic Fox bodied Mustang which is ever increasing in value right at this moment. Hop in quickly before it goes to someone else.
