As Ford moved past its Model AA era for pickup trucks, the Model 51 replaced it. This 1936 example is quite eye-catching, wearing its gold over red wings.
A slightly revised radiator shell and wheels separate the 1936 models from the 1935 1/2s. The paint and trim are in overall excellent order, the chrome front bumper fits tightly to the body. The cargo bed looks fantastic, especially with its oak cargo floor.
The truck rides on Coker Classic wide whitewall tires, size 6.00-16 at all four corners. Each one is mounted to a red-and-gold factory wheel with chrome center caps. On the passenger side of the cargo bed rests a full-size spare tire and wheel. The spare tire is an Atlas Grip-Sure wide whitewall, size 6.00-16, mounted on a factory wheel. The tires and wheels are all in good, original order. This truck rides on a 131.5-inch wheelbase.
Under the vee'd hood is a 221 CID, 21-stud Flathead V-8 engine breathing via dual exhausts. Backing this motor is a three-speed sliding gear manual transmission. The ignition distributor is driven by the camshaft and has a centrifugal force actuated, automatic ignition retard/advance system. Ford chose to install two water pumps in the engine that are driven by a belt. The same belt also powers the generator and the generator-mounted cooling fan. The engine has a single Solex 30 LFFK two-barrel, downdraft carburetor that is fed by an intake plenum mounted, mechanically driven fuel pump.
From the engine, the torque is sent through a dry single-disk clutch to a three-speed sliding-mesh transmission that is, due to its design, not synchronized.
Inside is a gorgeous, red cloth bench seat. There are mats on the floor, the headliner is in excellent order. A black, three-spoke "banjo-style" steering wheel and the red, metal dashboard looks great with gold-faced gauges. The felt or cloth inner door panels are in very good order. Wipers are inop. A floor-mounted shifter rounds out the interior
Competition to this Model 51 in 1936 included Chevrolet's Model FB, Dodge's D100, GMC's T14 half-ton and Plymouth's P2 pickup trucks.
