1964 ½ Mustang Convertible Project or Parts Car

Up for your careful consideration is a 1964 ½ Mustang Convertible. This car will require a full body off and frame restoration to restore it to its original, factory condition.

This 1964 1/2 Mustang Convertible is complete, all the parts are there. The odometer shows 95,799 miles. The original engine was replaced inSeptember of 1969 when the odometer reading was approximately 65,000 miles. There are approximately 30,000 miles on the engine since it was installed new.

Ownership History: I am the second owner, I purchased the car in early September of 1969, and it was in great condition with about 65,000 miles on it, however the engine ran rough, and had low oil engine pressure. I took it to my cousin who worked for a Ford Dealership and after testing he suggested replacing the engine with a factory new ¾ block 289 V8 with 4 barrel carburetor. It was professionally installed by Toomey Ford, in Amesbury, MA in late September of 1969.

The original factory color was Poppy Red, it was repainted before I bought it in Baby Blue, I later had it repainted Sunbeam Yellow (its current color) in August of 1972.

The car was a daily driver through1978,when it was put into cold storage until2008,and has been stored outside under cover since. It was driven several miles from cold storage to where it now sits.

The driver’s fender is stamped F508D165229

Indicating the following:

5 = 1965 year it was built (Ford used 5 for BOTH 1964 1/2 as well as 1965)

F = Dearborn, Michigan assembly plant

08 =indicates convertible

D = Engine 289 4V V8

165229 = unit (this was the 65,228 car built) According to Ford research, each plant started each year with number 100,001, The Falcon, Fairlaine, and Mustang were all numbered sequentially together, regardless of modelor type.

Door Plate Info: 76A 3 86 12F 11 1 5

76A = convertible, standard interior, bucket seats

3 = Poppy Red color

86 = interior trim black vinyl

12F = June 12, 1964

11 = Sales District Boston

1 = Axle Ratio Code = 3.00

5 = Transmission Code =4 speed manual

According to Ford, there were atotal of 121,538 Mustangs produced during the 1964½ model run.

Mustangs whichwere built between March 1964 and August 17, 1964, were identified as 1964½.

This Mustang was built on June 12, 1964, and has the number in the warranty tag shows165229and therefore was the 65,228th"Ford" built. (I say this because the production year at each plant started with 100,001, but they built Mustangs, Fairlanes, Galaxys, all at the same time), so, it's possible this Mustang could probably have a lower Mustang production number because of all the other models being built at the same plant.

(You can easily research the codes and number of Mustangs built from 1964-1965)

Description of Current Condition:

As the pictures show there is body rust on the hood, driver’s side and passenger’s side.

The hood and trunk lid were replaced some time ago from several Mustang parts cars I had owned.

After sitting idle for some 40 years, I’m sure more parts will need attention/repair/replacement.

I have taken underside pictures (with a long mirror placed underneath both sides) which show its condition.

The engine was winterized before I stored the car in 1978; it does turn over, but it hasn’t been run in8years. The clutch was slipping before I put in storage.The brake lines will need replacement. It has a new battery, oil and filter.

The interior is intact, although could use a good cleaning, the carpeting is intact and in good condition, they are not the original, I replaced them from a blue Mustang parts car I owned. There is good glass all around; the rear window was plastic and needs replacement along with the top which has a few repaired tears in it. The mechanics for the roof appear to be functional, no rust or damage. It did easily go up and down prior to storage.

The exterior chrome is clean and in good condition; this includes windshield and windows chrome, side inserts and rear trim around top.

The car was never in an accident, never hit or dinged in a parking lot. The front and rear pans show some dents from workers carelessly moving it around in the storage facility over the years. But those replacement parts are included.

The driver’s door no longer seats properly, and the passenger door doesn’t open. I suspect that frame rails may be rusted hence the problem with the doors.

The car doesn’t sag in the middle on either side.

It has a 4 speed transmission on the floor with a Hurst Shifter.

There are two areas in the trunk where rust was removed and sheet metal pieces installed (check pictures). The driver’s side floor was similarly repaired, rather poorly as the underside picture shows.

The driver's rocker panel is good, the passenger rocker panel has a rust through spot about 3/4 from the front. Both front fenders show rust.

· New Unmounted Spare Tire

· Hubcaps-2 Mustang, 2 Ford Crown Wire Wheel Hubcaps

· Original Factory 4 Speed Shifter Assembly

· Box of miscellaneous engine/body parts

All of these parts are included with the car; they are probably worth more than the starting bid!

Make no mistake, this is a project car, it is not a simple Bondo and repaint job, hence the low starting bid of $500. There is no reserve!

I have seen similar or worse condition Mustangs restored correctly and they are magnificent; but remember: it’s an investment of skill, knowledge, time, effort and money. If you or someone you know and trust has these, and you are the winning bidder, then you are on your way to owning a true classic! If you are lacking any of the above, do yourself (and me) a favor and don’t bother bidding.

Please note: I am not interested in parting out the car piece by piece, nor will I sell the spare parts, either as a lot or individually; they are free to the winner.

Title:

I no longer have the Title for the car.

If you know anything about older Mustangs, there is no VIN number like newer cars (on the lower left front of the dashboard); there is only the Warranty number stamped into the frame where the cutout is on the left front fender as I show in the pictures, as well as a plate on the driver's door which also includes the other codes (explained above and shown in the pictures).

In Massachusetts, where the car is located, a Title is not required to sell a car built prior to 1980, just a Bill of Sale; but your state may be different. Please check with your state's RMV as their rules may be different.

I met with the Mass RMV and my Insurance Co.

Mass RMV says they can't research and reissue a new Title due to the car's age and the last time it was registered (1978) nearly 40 years, they don’t have the records any more. It is believed that the original Title would have used the Warranty Number as the "VIN" as 1964-1965 Mustangs did not carry a VIN as we know it today (17 digits) on the bottom left of the dashboard.

My Insurance Company also no longer has any records dating back 40years; they did provide me with a form for the Bill of Sale which they reviewed with the RMV, and the RMV was ok with it.

The Bill of Sale will include: Warranty Number stamped and the fender frame and driver's door (which they verified does match), Data Codes describing the vehicle (1964 1/2 Ford Mustang Convertible, 289 4 barrel), and the mileage, plus buyer/seller information.

The lost Title suggests, that it might best to sell this car as a Parts Car. Depending on your state’s Title/Licensing requirements, and your ultimate intention (need parts for a 64 ½ Mustang) want to restore, etc. this may be a better option for you.

Why am I selling the car?

It was always my intention to restore this car (or have it restored). Since I first bought this Mustang, I have owned a total of four 1964-65 Mustangs, both coupe and convertibles, and salvaged parts as needed for the ultimate purpose of restoring my 1964 ½ someday. Alas, life seemed to have taken me in different directions (Military Service, College, Career, Marriage, etc.) now at this stage it’s time to give someone else the opportunity to restore the car to its former glory and enjoy driving it.

Ideally, it is my hope and desire that someone who is a true Mustang Aficionado will buy and restore this diamond in the rough, but one can always buy it, strip all the useable parts and together with all the free spare parts sell them piece by piece and make a handsome profit, and still have a 1964 ½ Mustang to sell. Someone will still want to buy it.
