Up for auction is a 1983 Ford Mustang Convertible with a 5.0L (302cu.in) engine and a 5 speed manual transmission. This car has led a very pampered life, in Climate controlled Garage. I purchased this car 3 months ago from an elderly gentleman who was in the process of downsizing, to move into a retirement community. He was the second owner of the car and was a next door neighbor to the original owner. He believed it was a real GT Convertible. I am a GM guy and did very little research, prior to the “spur of the moment” purchase. I will let the experts decide. (the white hood stripe puzzles me- it appears to be factory and aged with the rest of the car, but was typically only available on the black GT cars).
:
Exterior:
The body and under carriage are RUST FREE. I believe this car features all original paint. I have been unable to find any evidence of repaint or repair. The Red paint presents very well, but upon close inspection, does have some “acid rain spots” on the Hood and Deck lid. The car does have several small “parking lot dents” on the doors and one on the top of the right fender. There are a few minor chips and scratches, typical for a car of this age. Overall the body alignment is very good, (for a 1980’s car). The hood, trunk and doors open and close beautifully. No evidence of filler repairs or body work, very solid and clean, please see the photos. ( I believe the Black trim and Black Hood Stripe have been repainted, in the factory semi-gloss, at some point )
The POWER top is NEW and functions perfectly, featuring a glass rear window. This is a very nice, high quality top. ($1,100 for top and installation)
Power windows work well but the Driver and Passenger side window have some vertical scratches, from the regulator.
Drivetrain:
The 5.0L engine is not original. A factory remanufactured engine was installed in 1997, at a cost of $3,795. (All receipts will be included with sale) Estimated engine mileage is around 4,500 miles. Otherwise the engine compartment is factory complete, with all Smog equipment and factory manifolds.
This car starts right up and drives great! Everything is working and in top shape. It has a smooth note through the factory exhaust and cruises easy but will growl and move when you open the factory Holley 4BBL. The engine is powerful (for 1983) and has a very smooth idle for just enjoying a country drive with the top down. The 5spd transmission operates properly and I have driven this car at 70mph without any issues. The Clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing were new, when the engine was replaced in 1997 and function as new. Power is transmitted to a Factory 3.08 posi rear, fitted with factory drum brakes
Interior:
The interior appears to be 100% factory original. The seats and carpet are extremely nice for a car of this age, All the plastic is factory bright ( no evidence of sun damage). The dash is un-cracked and has bright color.
Lots of nice options: Including Air-Conditioning, Power windows, Power Locks, Premium Sound, Cassette Player, Tilt Steering, and Cruise Control.
Mechanically:
The car has factory power steering and factory power front disc brakes as well, making driving enjoyable and effortless. A very great looking, great driving classic!
Michelin Tires are in great shape, with deep tread. Factory aluminum wheels have a nice bright shine. Factory spare and jack appear to have never been out of the tire well.
I have tested the Air-conditioning. The compressor kicks on and the air coming out the vents is cold, but I tested it on a 50° day. Assume it needs charged.
The weather stripping is in good condition. Although I have not driven the car in the rain, I have not noticed any leaks, after several hand washings.
This Mustang looks amazing, drives as new, and gets a lot of attention. Keep in mind it is 35 years old and not a new car, but it is in amazing condition considering its age. You can hop in right now, drive home and enjoy.
Title is CLEAR and in my name. These 4 eyed Fox bodies are gaining traction in the collector market and at this price, should be a good investment. Thanks for looking.
The car is located, just outside of Cumberland, MD (about 2 1/2 hours from Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Although I have done my best to accurately represent the condition of this vehicle, I welcome and recommend an in-person inspection.
Thanks for looking.
