This 1929 Ford all steel Roadster pick up was built by Allegheny Speed Shop of Catabwa Virginia. It was built over a 7 year period by the owner, Larry Rathburn, as his personal car. The engineering on this car has to be seen to be appreciated. Larry Rathburn, owner of Allegheny Speed Shop has been building traditional hot rods for decades. This is an important opportunity for a serious enthusiast to own a truly unique car.
The car was started on a custom surface plate jig where the recontoured 32 Ford frame rails were kicked in the rear and pinched in the front to fit the 29 cowl. It has a custom dropped and vee'd front axle with castor adjustable chrome radius rods and a rear mounted transverse spring. The rear radius rods are also highly modified and adjustable to set pinion angle. It has Aldan coil over adjustable rear shocks and both front and rear panhard stabilizer bars. The steering box is cowl mounted and is a new aluminum Volvo unit with a custom pitman arm.
The radiator is a custom aluminum unit with a unique symmetrical upper tank that has both inlet and outlet paired at the top. The mechanical fan pulls air through a custom shroud, no over heating problems ever, even in ridiculous LA traffic.
The body has had extensive modifications to allow for a low and very comfortable seating position. The interior isleather and was done by Kings Upholstery of Roanoke VA. Both driver and passenger seats are heated, which is really nice on a cold morning. There is also a under dash heater, which is also nice on a cold and rainy morning.
The rear end is a Franklin Champ quick change with Ford 31 spline axles. At 70 mph the car is only turning 2100 rpm. The transmission is a world class 5 speed.
The engine is a built 283 Chevy with a Elderbrock C355 intake manifold and triple Rochester 2 barrel carburetors. The fuel tank is a 16 gallon stainless steel unit mounted in the bed. The top is folding or can be removed, whichever you prefer. The doors were custom built and lengthened 2 inches and flush fit. The rear of the cab has also been extended 4 inches, which makes for a very comfortable seating position. This car can be driven all day and when you get out, you won't feel likea cripple. It was built to be a driver.
I could go on and on about this car but if you have further interest, you can contact me. You can fly in and I will pick you up. You can drive the truck home no matter where you live. All you will need is gas.
