Rarely available restored introductory year big series Edsel available for sale. Tri-color vehicle in gold, with black scallop and white roof. The biggest 410 cubic inch engine offered: the E-475. Purchased in 2008 by a Florida hobbyist who returned all mechanical systems to factory or superior condition since then, all with an eye to keeping the car authentic and consistent with the shop manual. While Edsels come and go, typically available is a tired car with many systems requiring extensive service for a reliable carefree use. This Edsel is truly turnkey and ready to go mechanically as well as on the interior.
All service records will come with the car and evidence that since 2008 over $40,000 invested including, without limitation rebuilding: the engine, transmission, teletouch shift motor and relays, water pump, power steering pump, power brake booster and master cylinder, and wheel cylinders. The radiator was re-cored to prevent overheating. Replaced the exhaust manifolds and installed a new stainless steel dual exhaust system to restore factory sound levels and cure exhaust leaks. The gas tank was professionally restored and a backup electric fuel pump was installed, The mechanical fuel pump was rebuilt and a correct glass bowl fuel filter installed as per factory specs. The points and condenser were replaced with an electric ignition for superior performance and fuel efficiency, but can be easily reversed for originality. A brand new Holley carburetor, compatible with the factory manifold and air filter setup was installed. New hoses and belts. A new coil, distributor, double platinum plugs, and spark plug wires resembling factory routing were installed to enhance engine originality. New leaf springs from Detroit, new shocks, and full brake service.
As for the interior, a new dashboard and rubber trim were installed. The steering wheel and door and dash moldings were repainted. The interior having been replaced with NOS correct upholstery during the 1970s was protected by installation of custom period correct clear plastic slipcovers. New carpeting with the correct “E” heelpad along with reproduction Edsel foor mats were installed over new heat insulation. Front passenger seatbelts in a coordinating color were installed for safety. All dash gauges were removed, serviced, and installed performing as new, including: gas gauge and sender, clock rebuilt with modern mechanism, air-temp (vent and heat) servo motor and control unit rebuilt. The Town and County signal finding radio was transistorized to work with fm and am, while retaining original appearance. The turn signal lever and unit were replaced which required disassembly of the complicated steering wheel.
New trunk gasket, trunk boards, and trunk mat were installed with the most original material on the market. All 5 tires (including the spare) were recently replaced with factory correct wide wall bias ply tires from Coker, ensuring years and years of remaining tire life. The steering box was rebuilt and the front end professionally realigned. Test driving so actual mileage may vary by 100 miles or so.
What hasn’t been done? If you want a true show car as opposed to a daily driver, the car should be painted ($4,500 quoted recently, or you could disassemble and repaint piece by piece for up to $20,000). You may want to reinstall the seller supplied factory style antenna (instead of the aftermarket fully retractable one I’m using at present). Any buyer should visit and go with me for a test drive before buying -- I don't want any surprises, its a 60 year old car and is being sold AS IS, and WITH ALL FAULTS (no warranty of any kind, its an Edsel from 1958) so please make an appointment to inspect before bidding so you can fully appreciate its condition as well as the work that went into keeping this car reliably on the road! While as you can see from the photos the car shows great from 10 feet, there are many chips, cracks, stains, dings, etc., typical of an older restoration (here last body restoration was circa 1976). There is a small rear main seal leak typical of these cars; you won't need to add oil, but you will see a drop here and there after parking. Some of the window gaskets, windlace, and other hard to find parts show wear and as a daily driver have not been replaced. This is not everything, but everything I can think of. Look at my Ebay rating, I don't scam people. You will find after a good wax and polish it shines up and the chips and scratches generally don’t show up while driving or in photographs. If you’ve wanted a reliable original unadulterated Edsel (complete with working teletouch transmission buttons in the steering wheel) but don’t want the headache of an old restoration that will overwhelm you with constant repairs, this is your next car!!
Appraisal from Edselworld.com at $12,500 wholesale $16,500 retail included. Nearly $50,000 into this hobby project now offered at a reasonable price due to health reasons preventing owner's full use.
IF YOU DON'T INSPECT AND PAY FOR THE CAR WITHIN A WEEK OF A WINNING BID (or make mutually agreeable arrangements with me), THE SALE WILL BE CANCELLED AND THE VEHICLE RELISTED. This vehicle is for sale locally and may be withdrawn at any time. Thank you for considering this piece of American automotive history.
