1970 Dodge Challenger R/T (JS23R0B) REAL FACTORY 426 HEMI 4-speed car!!! The Challenger is 1 of 137 ever built and here are some of the factory options it had: FC7 Plum Crazy car, Super Track Pac axle package car (A34), original fender tag and perfect factory build-sheet, black vinyl top (V1X), power disc brakes (B51), console (C16), bucket seats (C55), Dana 60 rear end (D58), Rallye cluster with factory correct 8K tach (C62), factory hood pins (J45), wheel lip moldings (M26), Hemi suspension with sway bar (S15), AM radio with 8-track (R22) and the mileage on the odometer is 24,610 and believed to be original! (engine and transmission are not with the car)
All of the sequential body numbers (last 8 of the VIN) match on the radiator support, hood/cowl area, VIN tag, original fender tag and original buildsheet. You must check these numbers to authenticate that it is a real Hemi 4-speed R/T Challenger.
The Challenger has a very cool history. There is a photo album that will be included with the sale of the car. There are photos of the Challenger as a Rod Shops car and the dissasembly of it when it was being painted (current paint job) and set up for the racing chassis. At some point early in life it became a Rod Shops race car and was driven by Bob Bond! There’s even a white ink stamp above the original visor that says: Goodyear Bob Bond “Rod Shops” Bond Hardware and Marina Sales Shady Side, OH. It then came to Washington County, PA in the late 1970's and eventually it was sold to Bob George Racing in where it had all the chassis and paint work done and was raced in the 1990’s. That is pretty much the Challenger’s current condition with the exception of no motor or transmission. Plans were to put the Challenger completely back to factory original but I have several other projects to finish. Realistically it will take some time before I will get to this one so it is being offered up for sale. Some things that were restored and will be included in the sale are the following: Correct restored front bucket seats with new Legendary seat foam and factory leather seat covers, restored correct brake booster, master cylinder, 4-speed pedals, original mint complete steering column, front and rear bumpers have been re-chromed by one of the best in the business “Pauls Chrome” in Mars, PA, as well as the side markers and door handles. The window trim, vinyl top trim and the drip rails have been professionally polished and is wrapped up in paper (shown in pic’s).
It is getting very hard to find a real factory 1970 Challenger R/T that’s Plum Crazy, console pistol grip 4-speed with a Super Track Pak and this one is a real 426 HEMI factory car that’s 1 of 137 made before the options and color!!!!
The last one the hit the auction block was very strong at the Mecum Auction at a selling price of $264,000. It was lot# F164.1 at the 2018 May Indy Auction!
PLEASE BE AWARE THE CHALLENGER IS AS SEEN IN PHOTOS AND IS BEING SOLD WITH NO ENGINE OR TRANSMISSION.
PAINT AND BODY
I’m sure most people would agree to put it all back to original and do a complete concourse restoration but you could also put it back to the nostalgia race car “ The Rod Shops” car. The overall current paint on the Challenger is not bad at all and with some minor work it could look fantastic if someone wanted to go the pro-touring route and put it together the way it is. It was also a factory black vinyl top car (V1X) and the trim pieces are included. The body is in excellent shape and the panels are very straight with excellent seems and panel fit. The sheet metal is in excellent shape and appears to be all original. It is a super clean body and has not been all rotted out and filled with replacement panels like most. The quarter panel lips were extended for tire clearance and of course the trunk floor work for the rear suspension and bars. The Challenger was painted in the mid 90’s with base coat/clear coat and is in very good condition. The paint in all the door jams, engine bay, inner fenders and complete undercarriage looks great. Even the front wheel wells are painted as well as the insides of the front fenders! The original grill was painted body color but could be restored back to factory. The glass is in very good condition with only a few very minor marks. I believe all the glass is original to the Challenger but I did not check the date codes to confirm. There are some pic’s of the couple flaws in the paint. I am very critical on paint and have been restoring Mopars for more than 30 years.
Please call me at 412-496-1439 and I will be happy to discuss all the details! Thanks!!!
INTERIOR
The headliner is the original one to the car and still has the white ink stamp above the driver’s side visor that says “Rod Shops” on it. The brand new front black leather Legendary bucket seat covers and seat foam were just finished and look excellent. The original rallye cluster is in very good condition and has the dash
wood grain. The three speaker dash pad is also very nice and correct original. It was a factory A.M. 8-track player (Radio is missing). The dash harness appears to be very nice and has no burnt wires at the bulk head connector.
DRIVE TRAIN / SUSPENSION
The original Hemi and 4-speed have been long gone and the Challenger is being sold with no engine or transmission. The Dana 60 has been narrowed that is currently in the car with the current racing rear suspension setup. The Challenger has manual steering and currently has front and rear Wilwood disc brakes. It also currently has 15” Weld wheels and Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires front and rear. Please look at the photos closely to see how nice this extremely rare Hemi Challenger R/T body is. Even the undercarriage of the Challenger is unbelievably clean and one of the best I’ve ever seen!!!

CLOSING
The 1970 Challenger R/T is extremely rare as only 137 were built with the 426 HEMI and the 4-speed. Who knows how many were Plum Crazy, Super Track Pak, Black Vinyl Top and AM 8-Track. It’s an extremely rare and rust free car with a great history and will be a great investment for someone considering the extremely sold numbers these cars are bringing in today's market.
