This is a one of a kind pick-up built by the late Dean Bryant, it was his last and final build. ” Dean Bryant started back in 1949 with a 1929 Model A roadster pickup, his first car and his first chopped roof. In an interview for Hot Rod Magazine “Still got it,” he said of the ’29.
At that time Dean was working on movies as a horse wrangler and a sometime-actor. Genetically he was more attuned to the actor part, being the grandson of cowboy actor Howard Bryant and cousin of Howard Keel—J.R.’s nemesis Clayton Farlow on Dallas .
In his spare time Dean made custom cars. His big break came in 1955 when he got an order to make a ’32 Deuce Coupe for that future classic of B-moviedom Hot Rods from Hell. Things took off from there, with Dean cars now having been in everything from American Grafitti and Sylvester Stallone’s Cobra to Paula Abdul and Alan Jackson music videos. And of course there were the Dean cars in both the Gone in 60 Seconds movies.
Which leads us back to this car. In another mag article they wrote, I can see Sean sitting there with a big saw wondering what to do. “I thought, ‘Shall I really make it a custom?’” he said. The possible real custom would have been way different from what you see here. Dean did his builds unlike builders today in his shop in an undisclosed area of Los Angeles. It’s not secret like the bat cave, but Dean has crowd-control issues.
"I don’t want 10,000 people comin’ knockin’ on my door," he said. "I wouldn’t ever get nothin’ done."
And that would have been a real shame.
