1964 Corvair Monza Spyder
The Corvair was highly unusual for a domestic car, with its air-cooled, rear-mounted engine featuring the compact horizontally opposed piston layout of Porsche and VW Beetle engines. It also had an all-independent suspension and unit construction. Some called the Corvair the "poor man's Porsche." A bit of trivia to leave you with, the Corvair name is derived from a combination of Corvette and Belair!
For consignment, this Corvair Monza Spyder coupe which originally cost $2,636, with the additional $317 Spyder option package. This Monza's has the 150-horsepower "turbo" engine, chrome dress-up under-hood items, shorter final drive for faster acceleration, heavy duty suspension and a race-style multi-gauge instrument panel with a tachometer and brushed-metal trim. The four-speed manual and more-effective metallic brake linings were "mandatory" options.
Exterior
A respray of Saddle Tan with just a hint of metallic presents in good condition. A few dents and dings are present throughout the all steel body, but mostly unremarkable. The respray shows some inclusions of dirt, and some "mini fisheye" former bubbles? particularly in the rear deck area. Chrome and brite-work, with new badging, are all there, and correct, with gaps that are straight and true. Slight corrosion on the rear deck as it pertains to the intake vents which have chromed faces, which is where we see come pitting, although minor. At the point of mounting on the driver's rear bumper some invasive rust can be seen, and the paint has peeled off. Clean Corvair style wheel covers are wrapped up by correct size radials.
Interior
A swing of the driver's door reveals a clean utilitarian no frills interior. 2 large saddle color vinyl buckets in good condition stretch across the front, and a large bench is shoehorned into the rear of the car. noted above the rear passenger seat, the decking appears to have some earlier water damage, and some of it has staining, and is missing. The floor shifter sits within ergonomic reach of the driver, and in front is an original padded dash, with some dents and dings, but mostly original condition. Carpeting is underneath rubber mats that stretch across the front and are individual in the rear. Headliner is mostly clean and un ripped. We do see a small tear in the vinyl on the inside of the driver's interior bolster near the top of the seat back.
Drivetrain
Mounted into the rear is the horizontally opposed 6-cylinder 164ci engine. On top we cannot miss the chromed turbocharger in all its glory, and all this is attached to a 4-speed manual transmission.
Undercarriage
Underneath we see some heavy surface rust and a few areas of concern with some invasive rust. A careful study of the photographs will allow you to be the judge as to exactly what might be of concern. Noted is a new gas tank and sending unit, and the 4-wheel drum brakes with metallic linings. as stated by the consigner.
Overall a good example of the Monza Spyder turbocharged 4-speed, which we test drove and it ran smoothly, started quickly, and once up to temperature, idled smoothly. A set of Monza Spyder wheel covers also come with the car. Some concerns with the rust underneath, however we will allow you to be the judge. A nice presentation overall that can be driven away.
