With its assemblage of top tier components combined with a great looking exterior, this 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is what resto-modding is all about - it combines the timeless charm of one of Chevy's most heralded muscle cars with well-selected upgrades for a car that's arguably even more fun to drive than it is to look at.
Chevelles of this era were enjoying both commercial and critical success - they were rightfully branded as "America's Most Popular Mid-Sized Car" while at the same time attracting an ever-growing legion of performance enthusiasts drawn to its rugged good looks. You can see that this specimen was configured with equal amounts of inspiration and restraint. It'll certainly distinguish itself in a crowd, but if you take a lap around the car, you'll find nothing has been added as a ploy simply to draw attention. There's really no need, anyway - with the sharp looking maroon metallic paint job sitting on top of the Chevelle's already magnetic exterior, its curb appeal is already off the meter. The color itself is a great choice, giving this classic Chevy a very custom look, and it's in fine shape, although a buff and polish would bring it up a notch. Those broad stripes that run the length of the scooped hood and deck lid in back are no mere decals - they're painted on and still retain their admirably sharp edges. The chrome and brightwork throughout the exterior is also looking good.
Inside you'll find a black vinyl interior that very effectively meshes some modern touches with the Chevelle's stock configuration, starting with a pair of custom high-backed buckets in front that combine an appealing, smooth surface with a bolstered support while cornering. They straddle a custom center console that houses an assortment of control switches, as well as a couple of cupholders that are sure to come in handy on the road. In back, another pair of bucket seats sit in place of the original bench - a well-performed modification that's left no "cut and paste" clues of customization behind. Just beyond the Budnik Billet steering wheel (an attraction in its own right) sits a great looking custom dash that houses a full complement of AutoMeter gauges in the cluster. You're not likely to run short of audio or viewing options in this classic, as a JVC AM/FM/CD/DVD system sits just above the console to handle your entertainment demands. The deep, spacious trunk area is in good order, lined with an expanse of black carpeting on all four sides to give it a very finished look and conceal the battery that's been relocated there.
If you're one of the many who subscribe to the notion that "there's no replacement for displacement," you're sure to be pleased with what lurks beneath the hood - a Dart Big M 540 cubic inch V8 outfitted with Pro Topline heads, a high-rise aluminum intake and a Holley 850 carb for exceptional power. It teams with a built 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission and a 4.11 posi rear end to make for one seriously dynamic drivetrain. This Chevelle is about more than just straight ahead dominance, though, as it also features a coilover suspension with extensive Global West components front and rear for killer corner-carving ability, as well as Wilwood 4-wheel power disc brakes to bring it to a stop promptly. This Chevy muscle car classic sits on a set of 17" Budnik Billet wheels, outfitted with Michelin tires.
