The Cosworth Vega came from John DeLoren's desire to field a worthy American challenger to the European compact performance oriented BMW and Alfa Romeo imports of the day. The resulting Z09 performance option featured a Cosworth of England designed 110bhp Twin Cam, 16 Valve, 4-cylinder engine, the first of its kind in an American car since the 1930's Duesenberg, and Bendix Electronic Fuel Injection, a first for an American production car. Add to that, factory stainless steel headers, optional 5-Speed Borg/Warner T-50 overdrive transmission with 4.10 rear end ratio, Made in England Cast Aluminum Wheels, and DeLoren's mission was largely accomplished. Car and Driver Magazine chose the Cosworth Vega as one of the "10 Best Collectible Cars" in its fourth annual Ten Best issue, saying: "We're talking about historical significance here."
