1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Additional Info:
Up for Auction is a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS with 396 350 HP, M21 Muncie 4 speed and 3;55 geared 12 Bolt. I purchased the car in 1996 in Austin TX. with about 49K miles on the clock. Cannot prove the mileage but I have included a couple of original photos the day I took it home. The car was still wearing its original lacquer paint and all the original SS badges and bumper pad. Car was originally a bench seat car and was converted to buckets and console. Only panel that was replaced as you can see was the deck lid. Car had the usual rust in the lower quarters, front lower fenders and rear lower window area but was typical small amount of Texas rust. Solid floors and the car was running and driving.
Interior is coded 790 for pearl white bench seat. It was replaced with console and buckets. Correct GM seat brackets were used and a GM original console with mint top plate and belt holders.Dash is a nice re-pop. I do have the original dash and it will go with the car if you think you can re-store it. It was melted around the radio opening (badly)and at that time was not repairable to the standard of this car.
All the gauges are original GM green tint and they all work. Tach is the wrong red-line and I don't know if it was replaced at some time or came that way from the factory. Steering wheel in not correct for the car. I have the original plain black wheel that will go with the car. The shifter was converted to a Hurst linkage with the correct GM Muncie shift arm and correct GM shift ball. Shifts like butter. I have the original Muncie linkage and shift arm that will go with the car for bench seat. All the seat belts are in great shape. Shoulder belts have been re-webbed and tagged. Paint is the correct code 28 Fathom Blue. It is PPG Base and 2002 concept high solids clear. All minor rust was repaired professionally with butt welded patches. Car was stripped to bare metal and repaired then metal conditioned and sprayed with green etch, epoxy primer and then the base/clear. Body and paint will last with these correct procedures. Very high quality panel fit and gaps for a Chevrolet. Hard to find a straighter body and fit. pictures do not do this car justice. Paint is a high 8 to low 9. Will never say it's perfect but you will hard pressed to find any flaws. Look at the pics closely. You can see the quality. All the original SS badges and 396 emblems we nice enough to put back on the car after polish and repaint. Original stainless trim is polished to show quality. Finish on this car is very detailed and mint. Bumpers are GM show quality and you can see the reflections in them like a picture. Only badging that was replaced was the cowl induction and Chevelle grill emblem. both were replace with GM NOS.
Engine is the correct 3969854 casting number with casting date of F049 and a pad stamp of T1007CTX. Stamp looks correct to me but you be the judge. The pad behind the oil filter is stamped with a partial VIN number of 10L136XXX. cannot read the last 3 digits. Vin of the car is 136370L136052. The head casting numbers are 3964290 and are dated G309 and H019. Intake is 3955287 but I cannot read the date. Bad casting. Distributor is not correct nor is the carb. Carb is an NOS service replacement out the the box. Very nice original carb. Engine has been punched out 0.030 over and has TRW forged pistons and a comp 268H cam with new lifters. Heads were rebuilt with guides, seals and springs to match the cam. New bearings, rings and Felpro gasket set. Radiator is Aluminum aftermarket for great cooling in Texas heat.M21 4 speed is correct and is stamped with the partial VIN of 10L136052 on the main case. Date is P0R02B. New bearings, syncros. and gaskets were used in the rebuild. Shifts very smooth.Rear end is a 12 bolt posi with 3.55:1 gear set in a 71 dated housing. That was in the car when I bought it. Re-freshed with new axle bearings, seals, clutches and case bearings.Wheels are correct as I can tell. Two wheels are stamped YA and the other two wheels are stamped AO. Tires are new BFG radials with about 150 miles on them.
This car was my cruiser to the car shows for the last 5 years. No too many labels or paint marks on this car. Just did not finish that part do to driving the car. Car drives well and rides like a brand new Chevelle. Car has a set of slotted and drilled front rotors to help it stop better.
The built sheet is in partial condition. It was given to me by the previous owner. He had found it when the gas tank was removed to fix a leaking filler neck. The sheet shows the 790 trim code, You can see the 6 and the 2 in the upper RH corner of the vin 136052. Dealer is Capital Chevrolet in Austin Texas. You can see part of the ZL3 SS 396 Conv and some of the other random codes. looks like what is there matches the car and trim tag.

Added two more pics. One of the original GM blue door sticker with VIN visible and the 4 speed shifter handle and part interior showing. Good picture to prove the original car with the correct VIN before the restoration.. Second pic of motor stamp is bigger so you can see it. Also added more pics to the library showing the restoration.
