SUMMARY
The beneficiary of a detailed, ground-up restorationBecause of their relatively exclusive production and exceptionally impressive performance, second generation Corvettes continue to command premium prices. Even though big block roadsters have dominated the psyche of restorers for quite some time, big block coupes have proven, over the past few years, that virtually ANY C2 is a solid, stable investment. On that note, RK Motors Charlotte is happy to feature this fully documented coupe, an NCRS Top Flight Award winner that features a correct 427/4-speed drivetrain. If you're an avid Chevy enthusiast who's searching for an impressive Corvette that's poised to provide fun and value, here's your next classic!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Many Corvette enthusiasts regard the C2 as Chevrolet's purest Corvette design. And that's very easy to understand given this classic's small dimensions, purpose-built form and athletic demeanor. Of course, those qualities are best viewed through a beautiful restoration and, fortunately, the guys who reworked this Sting Ray did a fantastic job. Since the previous owner's goal was to have a Vette capable of gaining prestigious accolades on a national level, he made sure the car's no-hit body was clean, laser-straight and much nicer than any factory-correct original. Once that high level of fit and finish was attained, a buttery layer of correct Goodwood Green base was dashed with a white Stinger Stripe and sealed in glossy clear. And in June of 2003, this Chevy earned Top Flight honors from the National Corvette Restorers Society!
Despite traveling quite a few miles since its award-winning rebuild, this coupe presents the kind of excellent aesthetics that suggest those miles were logged selectively and in the best of conditions. At the front of its glossy body, a low-slung clip tucks a stainless-trimmed grille behind 'razor blade' bumpers and bright, bullet-style parking lamps. Above that grille, hidden headlights frame a familiar cross-flag emblem while bold "427" emblems highlight a stylish Stinger Hood. Behind those lights, a clean profile hangs traditional door handles and a polished driver's mirror above rowdy, retrofitted side-pipes. At the top of that profile, factory-tint glass rides behind stainless wipers and highly polished trim. And the car's sloped decklid centers a color-keyed fuel cap above clean taillights, a flowing Sting Ray emblem, a chrome tag frame and two more 'razor blade' bumpers.
ENGINE
Tilt the hood and you'll find 427 cubic inches of correct Chevrolet big block that backs a correct "JC" suffix stamp and a 1967-exclusive 3904351 casting number. At the top of the Chevy Orange mill, familiar Holley carburetors ride between a chrome, correctly decaled air cleaner and bright stainless fuel lines. Below that correct tri-power set-up, an aluminum Winters intake funnels a perfect air/fuel mixture in to tough, cast iron heads, which are capped by stamped and painted valve covers. When the juice hits the cylinders, reliable, chrome-capped ignition sparks fresh, stainless-sleeved wires while a stock cam and rotating assembly push spent gases through lightly weathered exhaust manifolds. Cooling for that fire is provided by a beefy radiator, which chills in front of pliable GM hoses and reproduction tower clamps. Old school V-belts spin a rebuilt Delco-Remy alternator opposite a vintage Frigidaire AC compressor. And, aesthetically, this Chevy's tidy engine compartment is exceptionally well done, framing a rebuilt master cylinder and reproduction Delco battery in clean, Satin Black surfacing.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Flip this Vette upside down and you'll find a solid, paint-marked chassis that, despite the age of the car's restoration, looks much nicer than when it rolled off the showroom floor. A correct Muncie 4-speed follows a correct 3885010 casting number with a correct P7C13 assembly stamp. At the ends of the car, a fully sorted double A-arm front and independent rear suspension is completely detailed down to its fresh shocks, spry springs and optional power steering. Above that rebuilt suspension, solid floor tubs ride on a straight, Satin Black frame. At the corners of those floors, standard, power-assisted discs mix good handling characteristics with quick and solid stops. And at the edges of those brakes, torque flows through retrofitted turbines, which lap 215/70R15 Michelin Symmetry redlines around red-detailed center caps.
INTERIOR
Open this Chevy's tossable doors and you'll find a correct Saddle interior that, during restoration, swapped correct factory vinyl for fresh factory leather. Seating comes courtesy of firm thrones that are anchored between color-keyed lap belts. From the driver's perch, stock gauges and an aluminum-trimmed glovebox frame factory air conditioning and a correct Delco radio. Below that radio, like-new carpet floats carpeted floor mats between a chrome shifter and predictable stainless sills. Above those mats, ornate door panels hang traditional armrests between small handles, crank windows and stylish chrome accents. In front of the driver, a satin-spoke steering wheel spins a faux wood rim. And behind the passengers, a fully carpeted storage compartment boasts just enough room for trophies and a display board.
