1947 Cadillac Series 62 Sedanette

Nearing the end of the 1940s, Detroit automakers continued to produce automobiles resembling earlier models made before World War II. Cadillac, under the supervision of designer and GM styling mastermind Harley Earl, updated the torpedo, or fastback, two door sedanette for an American public eager to resume life as usual after the war years. This sleek, aerodynamic Series 62 variant – bigger than a coupe, but smaller than a stodgy sedan, was an immediate hit. With a 129 inch wheelbase, the swoopy sedanette reaches out to nearly 220 inches in length, insuring a cruise ship like ride, and these fastback road happy sedans added to the allure of the Cadillac marque, justly advertised as the Standard of the World.

So, enough of the history lesson – let’s look at THIS CAR.

The styling of the 1947 Cadillac is arguably hard to improve upon. When it was purchased in 1993 it had undergone restoration and mild body work begun in 1958, and in 1985 it was given a heart transplant to a 1973 Cadillac 472 CID big block OHV V8. It was nosed and decked, the pontoon fenders were leaded, and it was given the first class finish it wears today. The Black Cherry paint remains luxuriously deep and sparkling after nearly 4 decades - no body damage or road rash, and no apologies necessary. Originally, the suspension, steering, and braking systems remained essentially stock and, because it drove extremely well, further improvements would come later. The car was driven from Lincoln, Nebraska to Springfield, Oregon, and would become a regular fixture at car shows throughout the Pacific Northwest for several years, garnering more trophies and awards than the ample back seat can accommodate.

In 2008 the Cadillac received new Fat Man Stage II independent front suspension, power steering and disk brakes, and a rebuilt 9 inch Ford rear end, upgraded leaf springs and traction bars. For nearly ten more years, it would continue to travel to car shows all over the West Coast region. Always a crowd favorite, this car has been a joy to show and share with others, but an even greater pleasure to drive. It has never been trailered to car shows.

Turning the clock forward to 2017, it was time for the Cadillac to undergo another life change. This time it would leap forward a half a century. Now powered by a brand new 6.2 liter, 430 horsepower, LS3 V8, backed by the 4L65E automatic overdrive transmission and new 3.70:1 rear end, the car is ready for the rest of its future as a freeway flyer. In addition to the new drive train, the Cadillac now features a B-Cool aluminum radiator, and custom built stainless steel gas tank; the cabin is insulated with sound deadening DynaMat and a tandem dual muffler system ensures this luxury sedan glides down the highways and byways in silent grace. The perfect visual adornments for this classic ride are the wide whitewall Goodyear radials wrapped around 1957 Eldorado Sabre wheels. There are just 5000 miles on the odometer since this last renewal, and the sedanette remains as fresh as a bright spring day.

The interior of this Cadillac is period perfect, reupholstered in Lincoln wool blend fabric with Wilton English woolen carpets. The steering wheel and dashboard gauges are refreshed and original components, updated to 12VDC; Vintage air conditioning and heat takes care of the climate control in the cabin, and other features include a retro style sound system, power windows and adjustable rear air shocks. The overall quality of this car is what you would expect in a Cadillac. The finish is excellent, the chrome, glass, rubber, and all interior fabrics are flawless. It is simply the Best of the Best - recently receiving an award proclaiming that fact. No finer restomod classic will be found at any price.
