1964 Cadillac DeVille Convertible

There are some cars that are so iconic in their design that you can literally take close up snapshots of them and show them to the average car guy and they most likely can guess what car and year it is. The 1964 Caddy is certainly one of them, as this year Caddy has hit the sweet spot in design, power, and luxury conveniences.

For consignment the "sweet spot" of Cadillac design with dual headlights, the pointed finned rear quarters with tail lights very recognizable, plenty of length and girth, luxurious interior in blue leather, mid 1960 design cues, convertible top, and a powerful V8 under the hood. This 1964 DeVille is an original mile car, has had but a few owners, and all have taken great pride and care of the vehicle when in their possession. Is it now your turn?? Hmmmmmmmm?

Exterior
Aspen White bathes large straight steel panels which start as a dual horizontal grille with dual headlights flanking either side. The front quarters provide a small visor in V form for the headlights and a signal indicator and trim piece are a top and run towards the windshield. Below the headlights is more horizontal ribbing which wraps around the sides of the front quarters and houses the actual turn signal glass. Another thin trim spear emanates from this and runs over top of the wheel wells towards the back of the car. A long straight hood covers the front nicely with well minded gaps, and a chrome window surround is well preserved and shiny and has soft ray glass inserted. An Ivory canvas convertible top is power operated and presents in very good condition with a clear plastic rear window. On back are the taillights inserted into the fins and large dual vertical signal and backup lights with their big chromed bezels surrounding. The chromed bumper is integrated with these side mounted lights, having the bezels actually become the bumpers as well...only in 1964. On all 4 corners are the "Sabre" wheels which show some corrosion on the center badges. These are wrapped by thin whitewall tires.

Interior
Variable speed wipers? Check. Signal-seeking radio? Check. It's also a 'yes' to electric seats, adjustable steering column, electric aerial, remote door-mirror adjustment, cruise control, headlamps that come on automatically and dip themselves via a dash mounted sentinel, a trunk lid that pulls itself down and locks automatically when closed, and which you can release from a button in the glove box. There's central locking with a command switch on the driver's door, there's even climate control. Yup, combined control of both heating and cooling functions made its debut in production cars at this point. And it worked well. Obviously, you will have taken power-assisted brakes, windows and steering for granted. Even the quarter-lights turn at the touch of a button. In fact, Cadillac offered so many of these luxury functions either as extras or standard equipment by 1964 that you wonder where else they could go from there. This is all a performance in front of blue leather tufted and buttoned leather seats which show some cracking and wear but no large tears. Blue carpet floods the floors and is topped with blue rubber floor mats.

Drivetrain
Under the massive hood we are greeted with a dark blue painted block and valve covered 429ci V8. It's topped with a 4-barrel carburetor and a TH400 3-speed automatic on the back of it. Way back a 2.94 rear is on. All of the drivetrain is original to this car and numbers matching as well as looking just fab, in its corrosion and rust free, polished environment.

Undercarriage
Perusing the undercarriage we see plenty of rustproofing, strong straight steel frame, solid floorpans and very slight areas of rust, but nothing to really concern ourselves with. A nice shiny exhaust system is below, and with independent coil springs and power drums upfront, and 4 link with coil springs and power drums on the rear, we have the Caddy famous ride and enough power to bring it to a halt when needed.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, smooth idle, and off to the test track with nice smooth power and shifting, it performs well in all situations. A straight panic stop, good smooth cornering (remember it's a BIG car!) and a beautiful cruiser. All those conveniences were found to be working.

With a few dents and dings from the passage of time, and a big car in the heyday of its design, in convertible form, you are looking at the cream of the crop per se not only in design but also condition. Time has been kind to this car, as have her owners with all looking really nice, and all working well. A fine car with a fine price here in out hallowed halls at Classic Auto Mall.
