1967 Buick GS400 Convertible From its founding, Buick was always a brand that put an emphasis on building luxurious cars that sat just one step below the opulently appointed Cadillacs in the General Motors hierarchy. Unlike Cadillac though, Buick still cared about driving enthusiasts and differentiated the brand by offering performance, paired with high quality finishings- earning them the moniker of "the banker's hot rod" as far back as the 1930s. In 1965, Buick dropped a bomb on the newly emerging muscle car sector with two letters "GS". Standing for Gran Sport, this new performance car was based on the "intermediate size" Buick Skylark which, although typically powered by a 300ci V8, now had a tire shredding 400 cubic inch unit that produced 325 horsepower and a staggering 445 lb-ft of torque. Built in 1967, this GS 400 Convertible is a stunning example of the ultimate in Buick performance, that benefits from a recent restoration in 2016. One of just 2,140 Gran Sport 400 Convertibles built in 1967, this is the one that you want as it was fitted with all the desirable options, making it even more uncommon. Believed to be a 3-owner Seattle area car from new, this vehicle is presented in Burgundy Mist with a black soft top and black vinyl interior. Chrome 5-spoke wheels are paired with period looking redline tires, and all of the unique vents on the fenders and hood that are associated with the GS 400 are present and accounted for. During the car's refurbishment in 2016, the car was repainted to an exceptionally high level and the bodywork is sensational with nice even panel gaps all the way around the car. The interior of this GS 400 is believed to be original, with just the carpet and headrests changed during the restoration. If this is true, it is a testament to how much the previous owners loved this car because it looks as if it could have rolled out of the Buick dealership a few weeks ago- not 56 years ago. As this was meant to be the gentleman's luxury car, it makes sense the interior is so nicely appointed- a pair of big comfortable bucket seats up front even offer power adjustment for the driver. One particularly rare feature displayed on this example is a fully reclining passenger seat- perfect for if you need a nap while out at a car show! A tachometer sits on the short console between the front seats and the long horizontal speedometer is laid out in front of the driver. The convertible soft top is power actuated as are the windows, meaning that as soon as the sun comes out on your drive, it's as simple as pushing a few buttons to enjoy an open air motoring experience. Where things get especially exciting on this Buick are under the hood- the 400ci V8 is topped with a Rochester Quadrajet 4bbl carburetor and the imposing looking "Star-Wars" air cleaner. This lump of American muscle is rated from the factory at 340 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque, and benefits from a full rebuild in 2016. Power is sent to a limited slip rear differential via the desirable Muncie M21 manual gearbox. This close ratio 4-speed is paired with a 3.42 rear end ratio which makes for lively acceleration and a truly exciting drive behind the wheel. An anti-roll bar was added up front which helps the car turn and power 4-wheel brakes help slow it all down. In the world of collectible Buicks, this car sits near the top of the mountain as one of the most desirable examples produced. With its host of luxury options, manual gearbox and truly stellar power figures, this car will still prove to be a joy to drive and would likely be just as happy being used as a sunny day daily driver, as it would a weekend show car.
