1972 Buick Skylark 350 Sun Coupe

How much over book would you be willing to pay to obtain a truly rare car from the early Seventies? While some may find it hard to group "rare," "car," and "Seventies," into the same sentence, history has proven these three words can, in fact, commingle. As proof, we present this 1972 Buick Skylark Sun Coupe.

For consignment a rare bird in a 1972 Buick Skylark 350 Sun Coupe. As for numbers actually made it is a bit of discussion, but research finds that from well versed Buick restorers and specialists the numbers are somewhere around 1,600 to 1,800 units. These cars were only made 1 year and the only difference between these is a golden corresponding Sun Coupe emblem on the B pillar, and a manually operated folding vinyl sunroof. This particular car comes with gold carpeting. This car for offering, has a GS style hood (with dual openings) which was not available on non-GS offerings.

Exterior
Perfectly preserved steel sides and other panels are draped in Sierra Tan. All chrome on this car is excellent, and all badging is present and accounted for. Some slight dimpling is noted on the door handles, and as mentioned the GS hood is on this car presently (the original hood is included). Starting at the front windshield at the belt line and moving rearward then upward at the front of the B pillar, then across the roof and returning in the same fashion on the other side is a wide and corresponding thin black pinstripe painted on and not a sticker. Directly in front on the roof is the tan vinyl top complete with a dual rail, wide, manually operated sunroof. It appears there has been no leaking from this top which is a good thing! A stylish rear roofline is noted butting up to the trunk lid, and this moves rearward and downward to meet the taillight inserted rear bumper, also in pristine condition. 14-inch 5 spoke Buick sport wheels are seen all around and are wrapped with 215/70SR14 tires upfront and wider 245/60SR14 tires on back.

Interior
Inside we see a beautifully preserved split bench tuck and roll vinyl seat in saddle color. The front seats have headrests, and the rear bench stretches uninterrupted across the back of the passenger compartment. The door panels make use of a trio of perforated stitched fabric in square format, a large wood appliqu panel which houses the interior pull and door handle as well as the power window toggles, power lock toggle, and side view mirror joystick. The lower panel of the door is matching gold carpet. Upfront on the dash which utilizes black panels and gold padded vinyl to shape the look of the dash. All is very clean, and the temp slider panels shows some cracking. The original AM radio/8 track player is aboard, and a rally steering wheel is fronting the dash and it sports a tilt option column. On the floors are gold carpeting nice and clean, and above is a smooth vinyl headliner with slight dirt surrounding the sunroof handle. On the hump in the center and in front of the seats is a floating locking tambour style box that can house 8 track tapes.

Drivetrain
A numbers matching 350ci V8 is topped with a single Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor, numbers matching and a TH350 3-speed automatic original to this car. A 10 bolt 2.73 posi rear axle is on back and has a stamping of LO B333. Noted is the ram air intake in front of the air cleaner which matched perfectly with the hood openings.

Undercarriage
Like a fine wine, this car has aged very gracefully with an overall nice patina on the underside, and some light surface rust on the frame and suspension parts. All structurally sound under here, with solid floorpans, independent coil springs for the front, and 4 link with coil springs for the rear suspension. Also, on are power disc brakes for the front and power drums for the rear. The stock exhaust is remaining on this car.

Drive-Ability
The test track proved to be no match for this rare car. With sunroof open, and heavy foot blazing, it was off like a flash. As it propelled itself forward in all its Sierra Tan glory, the transmission shifted smoothly, the suspension was solid, and acceleration was good. It cruised very nicely up to speed.

No real outstanding faults to speak of on any aspect of this 1972 example rarely seen. It is all buttoned up and runs great. All original save for the GS hood, and all ready to take home and amaze your Buick collector friends because chances are they will not have one of these! Let the sun shine in!! Go for the gold...
