The Story
I originally bought this Reatta last July and handed it to my mechanic to prep it for a 10,000+ mile tour of the USA. Unfortunately, there has been a change of plans and the car is now with my friend in Wichita, KS. I put a fair amount of money in making it 100% reliable for the trip ahead, so there shouldn't be any surprises other than the items I mention below. I considered shipping it home to Dubai to drive daily but quite fear for the poor car in an environment full of reckless drivers and year-round 120F heat. I'd rather sell it to an appreciative owner than fight a losing battle.
Body
—No rust. No accidents. No weird gaps or sketchy bondo repairs. No oxidation or burnt clear-coat. Straight car.
—The only paint damage is some of it flaking from the driver's side door. I attached two pictures of the damage.
—1991-only, 16'' Reatta alloys (also available in the '90 "Sixty Special"), with decent tires. Spare is included.
—The paint on the wheel caps has faded. A can of Sparkle Silver WA9967 paint will restore their factory look.
—Rear tail-light strip could use a polish and the chrome "BUICK" lettering.
Mechanicals
—Legendarily reliable GM 3800 engine runs like a sewing machine (new tuneup); 4T60 hydraulic 4-speed transmission shifts like it should.
—1991 was the only year in which Reattas did not come with the troublesome Teves Mark II ABS brakes! This car's braking power is excellent.
—Driver's window and A/C are non-op. Other than that, everything —from the central locking system to the cruise control stalk— work perfectly.
—Headlamps and their pop-up gear mechanism is fully operational; just got the switch replaced.
—Digital instrument cluster has been professionally rebuilt by a professional. It will last you a long time!
—No creaks, groans or any weird noises. Besides the tune-up it got an oil change; it's ready to drive.
Interior
—Orthopedic seats are ungodly comfortable and leather is in good shape. The steering wheel has a cover, so its condition is unknown. Both horn buttons work.
—Interior comes with two storage compartments in the back and a window to the trunk, perfect for golf clubs or skis.
—Aftermarket stereo sounds great, and, unlike the original setup, has a handy USB port to read your MP3's.
Final Assessment
This is not a show car, and don't plan on selling it for the price of one. It is an honest vehicle, mechanically sound and in need of some minor cosmetics to be a timeless daily driver. Give it some elbow grease, replace the window switch, paint those bits and bobs and you will have a great car that will turn heads anywhere you go. While not a BMW M3, it handles beautifully, feels solid and has a respectable presence. As I said, I would take it with me but don't want it to be destroyed by the elements and crazy drivers of the UAE.
