Debuted at the 1952 London Motor Show, Donald Healeys Hundred caught the eye of Austins Leonard Lord, who was seeking a new car design for the companys export markets, especially in America. Based on Healeys chassis design, equipped with an Austin 4-cylinder powertrain, and featuring an adventurous roadster body designed by Gerry Coker, the resulting Austin-Healey entered production and gained renown as one of the postwar eras best sports cars to come from Britain. Speed records fell to the little Healey and the cars were regular victors on both sides of the Atlantic, with drivers including the fast-rising Carroll Shelby. By 1959, the 6-cylinder 3000 arrived and continued the Austin-Healeys success both on and off the track.
The final and to many owners best version of the Austin-Healey was the BJ8 Mark III, introduced in 1963 and built through 1967. With its dual two-inch SU carburetors, the well-developed 2,912 cc six-cylinder engine delivered 150 HP and a 120-mph top end. Featuring a revised exhaust system, standard power brakes with discs up front, the Big Healey was renowned for its sporting driving experience. The snug cockpit was surprisingly luxurious in contrast to other contemporary sports cars, with welcome amenities including a handsome wood-faced dashboard and a floor console, plus full weather gear including roll-up side windows. Only about 17,700 examples of the Mark III were produced, and all surviving examples are cherished as enduring and enjoyable collector cars with readily available club, parts, and restoration support.
Benefiting from a recent, top-quality restoration and worthy of competitive showing on any concours lawn, this wonderful 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Sports Convertible is virtually impeccable from top to bottom. Accompanied by a BMIHT (British Motor Industry Heritage Trust) Certificate, this outstanding Healey is finished in its factory-specified combination of Colorado Red paint over Black upholstery and carpeting, enhanced by a factory floor console, a proper banjo steering wheel, and handsome wood grain dash panel. Produced during August 1967, its factory equipment includes a 4-speed gearbox, plus very desirable options including wire wheels, an adjustable steering column, a tonneau cover, wheel nuts (versus knock-off hubs), a laminated windscreen, and overdrive for relaxed highway enjoyment.
This Austin-Healey was purchased new in Texas and unlike so many classic sports cars available today, it remained with the original owner until 2020. The vehicle was never dismantled, and it was kept in sound and complete form by the original owner until they recently commissioned a total and professional restoration to concours-quality standards of workmanship. In addition to the BMIHT certificate, this outstanding 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Sports Convertible is offered by copies of the original TX title document and original bank loan note, plus a selection of restoration photographs. Only 2,116 post-restoration miles are indicated at the time of writing. If you are looking for a top-quality Austin-Healey 3000, this late-production example from 1967 is a compelling find for collectors of the worlds most important and enjoyable postwar sports cars.
