A meticulously maintained turn-key Audi 5000 with desirable 5-speed manual transmission. Owned long-term in Washington then Florida, the vehicle is now offered by a vintage Audi collector who has lightly cosmetically and fully mechanically restored the vehicle for the next owner to enjoy either as a reliable classic driver or to bring to shows.
Vehicle Details
I am regrettably listing my 1987 Audi 5000S 5-speed. An opportunity for a new project has presented itself and I need to make room for my next adventure. If I didn’t need the space, I would keep this one forever! It may not be a quattro or have a turbo, but I’ve owned 30+ vintage Audis over the last 13 years and the 87+ 130hp 2.3L 5-cylinder cars are some of the most reliable. Pair this with a rare 5-speed manual, no sunroof, a major mechanical freshening, and Nautical Blue metallic paint (arguably one of the better colors for these), you’ll have a 5000 to drive anywhere if you’d like, including to cars & coffee.
In the last 5,000 miles, this vehicle has had a full timing belt service, top end rebuild
Including new hydraulic lifters, exhaust, brakes, ignition tune up, suspension bushings, and new clutch. We drove this nonstop from Orlando, FL to Hartford, CT and it never skipped a beat (and got surprisingly good gas mileage too, no premium required either).
The first owner had the car in Washington long-term and was dealer then independent-shop maintained, from there it made its way to Florida to a retired gentleman who grew up Kazakhstan with these cars in his family. While nothing was wrong with the car mechanically, he replaced many of these components himself for fun on the weekends. Having good connections overseas, his ability to get parts was phenomenally better than what we have here stateside: if he could get it, he got it, and almost all of the parts that were replaced were genuine from Audi or OEM suppliers.
Of all my Audis, this simply feels fresh, drives as it should, handles all the bumps in the road superbly. You will not find a fresher mechanical 5000 on the market.
Where he spent less time were the cosmetics: which is where I came in and do what I do best: detail and restore. In addition to a full paint correction, I elected to respray the hood and trunk to correct some bird dropping spots and rock chips. The rest of the vehicle is on original paint. All trim and lenses are present with no major flaws. Glass is original to the vehicle and has no cracks. The Quartz grey velour interior is about as showroom as you can get, with virtually no wear on the seats and no cracks in the dash. The headliner was redone at some point and still looks great. I’ve also replaced the power antenna recently and reinstalled the original radio, which still works. Speakers are newer as well. I have ensured all electronics are functional on the vehicle as well, including cluster, lights, switches, stalks, windows, and window regulators. The power locks do function but sometimes are a bit slow or have an off day.
I am happy to get into more specific work done to the vehicle with interested parties by request. I have a folder full of receipts and ordered parts for the vehicle since new.
Two things of note for the next buyer:
1) The AC system has a leak that has not been traced, but the compressor is newer and has been converted to R134a. Heat is as it should be and all climate functions work on the electronic unit.
2) In common fashion, the odometer has failed a couple times throughout the car’s life. The last time for ease the entire instrument cluster was replaced out as there were some other issues looming with bad solder joints on the board. This board and instrument cluster fully works, but the odometer gears have failed again recently so mileage displayed is NOT actual mileage. We estimate the car likely has over 100,000 but you’d be hard pressed to tell it does.
This was a very loved vehicle by all of its owners, including myself. I’ve had plenty of these in automatics which ruins a little bit of the fun, a 5-speed changes the characteristics of these tremendously. You won’t win a race but you’ll have a lot of fun driving it! If you’re nostalgic for a 5000 or want to discover these cars for the first time, this is a fantastic example to start off with!
Vehicle sold on a clean Connecticut title.
