1966 Alfa Duetto
Titled as 1965 Alfa. (clean)
VIN AR-662012
I purchased this car in 1997 in Southern California. At the time of purchase, I was informed that the engine needed to be rebuilt as it had thrown a rod. After purchasing the car, I had the engine rebuilt and balanced by Hollywood Machine Shop in Pasadena, California, and the transmission was rebuilt by Alfa Italia in Burbank, California.
In addition to the engine and transmission rebuild, the clutch and water pump were replaced. The Weber Carburetors were rebuilt and tuned a few years ago by Top End Performance in North Hollywood.
This car is completely stock with the exception of an electric fuel pump that is installed where the mechanical fuel pump used to exist. I kept all of the parts so returning it to a stock mechanical fuel pump would be trivial.
The exterior of the car has been painted several times, with the original color apparently being the same as the current color, blue. What is probably the original blue paint is shown in the engine compartment and trunk compartment. The condition of the existing paint is fair at best. The car also has a minor dent in the front left corner, which appears to be an easy fix.
I restored the interior of the car with correct rubber and trim as needed as well as a rebuilt dashboard from Just Dashes in Van Nuys. The entire interior is in very good condition. All of the glass is in very good condition. Windows function, lights and accessories function. All of the instruments were rebuilt by North Hollywood Speedometer. It was converted to ATE brakes at some point. There is an occasional whining sound from the speedometer cable. The reverse light does not work and the differential is somewhat noisy. Also, the trunk lid doesn’t stay up on its own. The wood steering wheel has a few cracks but is otherwise nice. The wheels have some light rust that doesn’t show up in the photographs. The door limiter straps are rusty. The car is fitted with 3-point seat belts using the factory anchor points. The car is complete to the best of my knowledge.
The convertible top is canvas and in good condition with the exception of the rear window coming out at the seams. As such, the top will need to be replaced or repaired.
The car starts and runs excellently. At the recommendation of Top End Performance, the choke cable is not connected. The stock air cleaner setup is intact. Occasionally there is a slight driveshaft vibration when backing the car up. There is no hesitation, smoke, or any other suggestion of engine problem when driving the car. It is happy to rev as quickly as you want. The transmission does NOT grind when downshifting into second. This car is a joy to drive.
Since the engine rebuild, the car has probably been driven less than 5000 miles. The tires have less than 5000 miles on them and some of the original color markings from the factory are present. The tires are Pirelli P400 Touring tires. The date code suggests that the tires were purchased a few years after I purchased the car, but the tires show no cracking or signs of age. The car has been stored indoors since we have owned it, not exposed to the sun and the UV radiation that damages rubber.
With few exceptions, the body is in excellent rust-free condition. As already mentioned, there is was a minor impact to the front left corner of the car as shown in the photographs. There is also minor bubbling on the left fender near the door (see detail photograph). The bubbling has not changed since the car was purchased 18 years ago. There is surface rust beneath the radiator, and corrosion present underneath the battery. There is a patch panel under the passenger foot area. I don’t know why it’s there. That panel has light surface rust. Again, please refer to the photographs. Other than these very minor rust area the car is rust free to the best of my knowledge.
The car has a clean title, is registered in my name, and tags are current. It is currently using Historic Vehicle license plates but the previous set of plates is available should the buyer wish to have them. Please contact me if you want any additional information or photographs.
