1974 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Additional Info:
1974 Volkswagen Karmann GhiaLast year of the Karmann Ghia
The first Volkswagen Karmann Ghia's rolled off assembly line in Osnabruck, German as 1956 models. The automotive and the public instantly fell in love with the beautiful design and hand crafted workmanship. The Karmann Ghia was last produced in 1974 and only 365,912 coupes and 79,326 convertibles were produced in 20 years, which make the Karmann Ghia a fairly rare car. Today, the Karmann Ghia is one of the most sought after air-cooled Volkswagens. This is probably due to their unique design and hand built unibody construction. The biggest drawback to restoring a Ghia is that they tend to rust considerably more than other Volkswagens. It is very rare to find Karmann Ghia rust free and usually involves extensive undercarriage and body repairs. The Karmann Ghia has a graceful, timeless design that, in 1969, was named one of the most beautifully designed products in the world. In June of 1972, Car and Driver magazine put the Karmann Ghia into world class status by comparing it to the ever classic Porsche Speedster. The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is truly a special car. It is beautiful and timeless in design and it was wonderfully affordable, reliable, and fun to drive!
Body
- Completely repainted with a correct style oil based paint- Woodlands Green Metallic. Not perfect but looks great. 9 out of 10. Looks good even up to a few inches of the car.
- Rust free - Floor pans, frame, undercarriage, suspension all rust free - Cleanest VW floor pans I've ever seen. I striped out all the old carpet and wire brushed the floor pans and repainted with primer to continue to keep them in good shape.
- New headlights
- Clean bumpers and front grill
- No body damage. There was some slight Oklahoma hail damage when I purchased the car and I had that all cleaned up as much as possible before I had it repainted.
- Still has the original spare tire and jack up front.
Suspension
- New brakes on all four wheels
- New master cylinder and brake lines
- Rebuilt front steering box and front suspension
- Rear suspension is a little squeaky but still solid. I understand you can spray talcum powder in there and it will clear up the squeak.
- Brand new tires - less than 500 miles
Engine
- Motor has about 11,000 miles on it.
- Runs well
- Hardly leaks oil at all
- New vacuum advance distributor
- Electronic ignition
- New oil pan with built in drain cock
- New rear main seal
- New valve cover seals
- New Cables - Clutch, Throttle
- Tune up, wires, plugs, cap, rotor, fuel pump, regulator
- Oil filled air filter
- New exhaust system
- New carburetor
- New Engine cover release cable
- New gas tank
Driveline
- New Clutch, Clutch plate, Throwout bearing
- New shift linkage front and back
- New stick shift linkage bushings
Interior
- New Dash Pad
- New Emergency brake with hardware. Needs adjustment
- New fuse box and fuses
- New door panels
- Seats in good condition - one very small tear that is hard to notice
- Brand new carpet - 20 piece laid down correctly
- New arm rests
- New door panels
- New ignition with new keys
Garaged, cleaned and waxed often. Not a perfect car, but super fun to drive. Everyone loves the car and gives it a thumbs up. I've put a lot of work into the car but my wife and Ido not have time to drive it like we would like too.
Good Luck
