1968 Volkswagen Beetle - Classic Coupe Additional Info:

1968 Volkswagen Beetle Coupe

In 1999, Advertising Age declared the car's not-so-small ad campaign to be the best campaign of the last 100 years, besting Coca-Cola, Marlboro, Nike, and McDonald's. The quirky concept and copy-which, according to Advertising Age, "Gave advertising permission to surprise, to defy and to engage the consumer without bludgeoning him about the face and body"-was a game-changer for the entire industry. The "Think Small" line and accompanying self-deprecating copy was written by Julian Koenig, who was also responsible for naming Earth Day and coming up with Timex's "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking" tagline. He's also half-responsible for daughter Sarah Koenig, whom you may know from NPR's This American Life and Serial.

For consignment a 1968 version of the ubiquitous Beetle, restored, and mechanically has had the '"once over" in 2018, and runs just great. Sporting its original wheels with new trim rings, very little surface rust, and would be considered as totally "de-bugged".

Exterior
Beige adorns this curved steel paneled beetle shaped V-dub. A few chips in it, and some early signs of minor rust can be seen particularly on the hinges of the doors, and below the front "trunk" door, but in great drivable shape. Chrome is nicely preserved in the bumpers, trim, and any badging. Gaps are very nice, and the cute little running board is all solid. Highlights would be for this writer the swooping drip molding on either side of the roof which has a great line, and the twin chromed mini exhaust tips that peek out from under the curved bumper...all good for this buggy.

Interior
With the seats and all other accompaniments being restored in California in 2000, it bugged out and made its way east to Pennsylvania and is in very nice condition. Beige vinyl covers the front buckets and rear bench. Beige would be your favorite color to own this car as the dash, carpet, headliner, door panels, and all interior surfaces save for the chrome highlights with a slight bit of black thrown in for contrast. All surfaces are in good condition with slight smudging here and there, but nothing that would bug you to no end.

Drivetrain
This love bug sports a 1500cc engine which consigner stated has undergone a complete rebuild with new one piece pushrod tubes, new H30/31 carburetor, new tins, rear main seal, thermostat, and wires with a new cap & rotor. A new clutch allows you to shift smoothly through the 4-speed manual transmission. We are poised to bug out with a foot off the clutch and heel on the accelerator.

Undercarriage
Very slight areas of surface rust underneath, but mostly straight steel covering the undercarriage in an all but ground effects fashion. We can note some minor chipping of the undercoating but certainly maintaining a structural soundness. A recent Pennsylvania inspection conforms this. Definitely this cutie has avoided the rust beetle and is all sound.

Drive-Ability
As the Classic Auto Mall Writer, for this section I try to drive as many cars as I can, but certainly will drive ALL Beetles, as I just love these cars. This one did not disappoint, as it started right up, had that wonderful tinny sound that the new bugs severely lack, and took me all around the Classic Auto Mall test area with ease. All was good, and I had an inkling to get high on edibles and think back to 1968 and all the hippies who came before me and traveled across the country to find nirvana. But I digress and the ride was just wonderful with all working parts, and a smile on my face.

Well maintained, a 2000 once over on the exterior and interior, and a 2018 redux of the engine, and "Volks" we are ready to get our cells out and become shutterbugs on this one. Come see it and you will be happy you did! Peace, Love and Kool Cigarettes my friends...
