1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle
Bela Barenyi, an 18 year old Hungarian student, submitted a chassis design for a "Volkswagen" in 1925 and is recognized as designing the basic VW Beetle. Ferdinand Porsche, an Austrian automotive engineer, created the Volkswagen Beetle after receiving a contract from Hitler in 1934 for prototypes. The Beetle's air-cooled flat 4 engine was designed by Franz Reimspeiss not Ferdinand Porsche. Even with 20 plus million being built to date, he received less than twenty dollars for his work.
I'm happy to announce we have bugs here at Classic Auto Mall. Oh, certainly not the kind that you would swat at, but these were made in Wolfsburg Germany, by the millions and infested the USA over the years. This classic 1974 Super Beetle version is in nice condition, and ready for its just like the ads dip in our test lake, although careful we have no way of getting you back, so you'll have to take the ads of the day's word for it.
Exterior
Yellow covers all the curved panels and fenders, and presents nicely with some minute inclusions seen throughout. Body panels all fit nicely, and even as late as 1974 VW beetles were still utilizing the exterior nonintegrated fender attached by running board design literally from the 1920s. Chrome bumpers are nice, and badging is showing just a little wear. Glass and surrounding trim is good and since this is a pre-elephant footprint taillight car the taillights are in proportion to the car. Those other taillights tend to bug me.
Interior
Two tone tan vinyl door panels with blackened handles and a billet style darkened window crank make the door presentation. Seen upfront is a molded curved aftermarket dash in matching yellow. It is nicely curved and has some extra gauges in the center, as well as a Sony Radio/CD player. Even a molded support makes its way to the otherwise lonely shift lever and gives it more prominence as it curves around it to the floor. High back buckets with cloth inserts and tan vinyl bolsters bordered by dark brown piping to define the two surfaces, make up the front seats. The rear bench carries this motif through and sports an invasion of stick-on bugs climbing upwards towards the rear glass. Dark brown carpet nicely cleaned with Bug floor mats are seen under the seats, and a tight tan headliner in vinyl is above. You could say this car has bugs inside.
Drivetrain
The 1600cc flat 4-cylinder engine topped with standard carburetor, a 1-barrel Solex brand. There is a 4-speed manual transmission attached. Let the clutch out and bug out!
Undercarriage
A nice overall gracefully aged patina shows underneath. All structurally sound and simple is the "buzz" word. Independent coil spring front suspension with disc brakes is upfront and independent rear suspension with drum brakes on back. This undercarriage is crawling with well cared for looks.
Drive-Ability
A quick startup and I'm met with that "tinny" exhaust sound that can only be heard on an older VW. The car ran smoothly, shifted effortlessly, and handles corners very nicely. All was in good working order for my drive.
A bit of customization for the interior particularly for the molded dash, nice seats and that screaming yellow bathed exterior, 1974 German engineering never looked so good, and you better hurry over if you are interested as previous examples here at Classic Auto Mall had people swarming around them and then they eventually flew out the door. ZAP!
