Once a beautiful car - now just an awful sub-standard repaired Rolls-Royce

This is the definition of a very sad repair on a Silver Shadow that we see more often than we would like to.

Background: Some6 years ago this was a clean & dry Silver Shadow in need of "bringing up to speed" and restoration. It was free of rust and accident/damagestill showing original paint but faded. The car was stripped to the bare body and given a complete repaint with doors off and windows out. Painted in beautiful 2-tone Larch green over Scots Pine and reassembled with all bright work either refurbished or stainless steel buffed and polished to a high sheen. New lights and lenses fitted with new window rubbers; a correct $20,000 repaint. The interior was in good condition to commence, but all the burl walnut refinished at a cost of some $3,500. A new headlining was fitted at a further cost of $3,000. The car was completely gone over mechanically and operationally to include all hydraulics and brakes. Specifically; rebuilt brake pumps, rebuilt hydraulic accumulators, 2 x accumulators, 4 x rotors machined, 6 x rebuilt calipers, all new hydraulic and brake flex hoses and with the reservoir cleaned, flushed and new 363 added. Those of you in the know, will understand this was a $12,000+ exercise in its own right. Everything else was then reworked, serviced and/or repaired as required; A/C, heater, electric windows, seats etc. In a nutshell, this car underwent a $45,000 restoration.

The vehicle was sold in the Spring of 2011 and within a year of sale, the car was involved in an accident with a century old oak tree where the old oak won hands down. 2 years after that, the car came into our possession as a parts car. We never had the opportunity to make any decisions about her when some wise fellow decided to buy the car and repair her. We advised against it but the buyer insisted.

Today: We are now back in the possession of the car and we are pretty much in tears.

The person who bought the car from us in its damaged state did a very sub-standard repair. The car was straightened on a jig and partially "cut & shut" on the front in a way that is simply horrendous. The front chassis rails remain bent, even though the car looks and drives straight. The car was repainted all over black and although from afar looks decent, in reality it might as well have been repainted with a home spray kit - yes, one step up from rattle cans! The car presents awful; inconsistent paint, wavy body panels, ill-fitting body panels & fittings and overall poor repairs. Just a sad state of affairs. The interior is "ok" still but clearly left with the windows open. Surpisingly, she starts, idles, drives and stops - a testament to our own work some 5 years ago. That said, the whole mechanicals should be gone over again. For example, the brakes feel soft and there are creaks and groans from the suspension. The rear of the car sits too high. Several features are no longer operational to include; speedometer, AC, radio, wipers, lights. There is a video inserted below showing me driving the car.

So, here we go again; do we part her out, or does someone else want to have a go at "putting her right"? If you were making a film and wanted to blow her up with flames and fire, this would make a great looking car for that purpose.

Make it a huge flower pot or make it a smash up derby car but whatever you decide to do with it, make no mistake, she is fundamentally a pig in our books. Now, as any one proficient in Silver Shadow knows, ANYTHING is repairable. It can be done, but we couldn't be bothered. For those that do want to take her on, she does have a CLEAN title. Title shows VIN as: RR67SRX2256. This is how it was recorded many years ago and been carried thru on all tiles over the years. Of course, the Rolls-Royce correct VIN description is: SRX2256

I am sorry if these terms seem harsh but there seem to be some very unrealistic buyers out there - fortunately, only few of these people exist but those that do can make life difficult, so it appears EVERYTHING needs to spelled out. Very simply put, this particular Silver Shadow is a very poor condition old car being offered for sale. Further, Rolls-Royces are not without nuances, idiosyncrasies and they are renown for a host of design issues which can make them not inexpensive to maintain. This is well documented in many circles. You need to be a special and considerate type of purchaser to own a Rolls-Royce. Their down-side is part of the fun in owning them! As the old saying goes; "we love to hate them and hate to love them!" So, please respect the terms and conditions when you bid.

VALUES: Rolls-Royce values vary wildly, entirely dependent on their condition. There are, of course, other aspects that add or subtract from their values – Long Wheel Base versus regular, the year which dictated certain technical changes, etc. The colour alone, for example can make a big difference.
