We have a first-generation Pontiac coupe at MotoeXotica Classic Cars that has some serious upgrades such as LS2 power and a full Ridetech suspension! This hot red Firebird is also a LA built car that has spent all of its life in sunny and dry Arizona!Made in General Motors’ Van Nuys, California factory (VIN code L) during the fourth week of April 1968, this Firebird left the line with a black vinyl interior. Finished in red, the car’s paint and trim are in overall excellent order. The car’s bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is immaculate, the Optima battery looks new and the chrome bumpers (hoop in front, typical wraparound in rear) are in very good order. Out back is a raised rear wing painted to match the body. The sexy stance of this Firebird is provided by a full Ridetech Complete Coil-Over Suspension, a serious upgrade that cost over $5k! The suspension features Single-Adjustable Coil-Over Shocks, Upper & Lower StrongArm Control Arms w/Tall 2 in. Drop Spindles, Front MuscleBar Sway Bar with PosiLinks End Links and 4-Link Suspension System. Mounted on all four corners are BFGoodrich low-profile radials, size 225/45ZR17 in front and 275/35ZR18 in back. Each one is mounted on a Centerline five-spoke alloy wheel. The tires and wheels are all in very good order. Under that counterbalanced hood is a modern surprise, a 364 CID LS2 V-8 engine. It has dual electric cooling fans and sequential multi-port fuel injection and puts out about 400 horsepower with a matching torque rating. The LS2 was introduced as the Corvette’s new base engine for the 2005 model year and it also appeared as the standard powerplant for the 2005–2006 GTO. It is similar to the high-performance LS6, but with improved torque throughout the rpm range. The LS2 uses the “243” casting heads used on the LS6 (without the sodium-filled valves), a smaller camshaft and an additional 14 cubic inches. The compression ratio of the LS2 was also raised to 10.9:1. Backing up this motor is a 4L65-E four-speed, one of a series of automatic transmissions designed for longitudinal engine configurations and is the electronically commanded evolution of the Turbo-Hydramatic 700R4, originally produced in 1982. Driver convenience features in this car include vintage air-conditioning, power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes and a bonus – power windows! Inside, the car’s black bucket seats are in very good order, as are its matching carpet and headliner. A new three-spoke, aftermarket steering wheel has been fitted that echoes the Formula steering wheel found later in second-generation Firebirds. The black inner door panels and matching vinyl instrument panel are in very good shape and the dash has been retrofitted with Auto Meter digital gauges. A B&M shifter rests on the transmission tunnel and a Kenwood AM/FM stereo with CD player and JVC speakers rounds out the interior. The first-generation Firebird had characteristic Coke bottle styling shared with its cousin, the Chevrolet Camaro. Announcing a Pontiac styling trend, the Firebird's bumpers were integrated into the design of the front end, giving it a more streamlined look than the Camaro. The Firebird's rear “slit” taillights were inspired by the 1966–1967 Pontiac GTO. The styling difference from the 1967 to the 1968 model was the addition of federally-mandated side marker lights: for the front of the car, the turn signals were made larger and extended to wrap around the front edges of the car, and on the rear, the Pontiac (V-shaped) Arrowhead logo was added to each side. The front door vent-windows were replaced with a single pane of glass and Astro Ventilation, a fresh-air-inlet system. Coupe competition to this Firebird in 1974 included AMC’s Javelin, Chevrolet’s Camaro, Dodge’s Charger, Ford’s Mustang, Mercury’s Cougar, Plymouth’s Barracuda and Shelby’s Mustang GT 350. If you’re after a ponycar with classic lines and modern features underneath, this 1968 Firebird may just be the ticket for you.
