In 1977 the third gen square body GMC series truck was four years into production and had seen several advanced updates to the previous truck designs of generations past. The new rounded lines moniker was evident of the new cab overhaul. Soft touch materials were used throughout the passenger cabin, such as the dashboard, doors (arm rests), steering wheel, and shift levers. You’ll also find Chestnut wood grained inserts on the dashboard.Safety updates were at the forefront of these third gen trucks. The first was the standard passenger-side sideview mirror, and the second was the energy-absorbing collapsible steering column. The third safety advancement was the introduction of dual front lap-and-shoulder safety belts with emergency locking retractors for outboard occupants. Other safety features included soft-padded interior panels for appearance and safety, 3,329 square inches of tempered and laminated safety glass, prismatic rearview mirror, six turn-signal indicator lamps with asymmetrical flash, four-way hazard function, and lane departure function.
Third-generation Square-body K-Series pickups gained an all-new, high tensile strength carbon steel ladder type frame with "drop center" design. Steering controls included variable-ratio recirculating ball steering gear with optional hydraulic power assist. Braking controls included front self-adjusting disc brakes with rear finned drum brakes.
All new K-Series pickups featured four-corner Vari-Ratemulti-leaf springs, front live axle with symmetrical (inline) shock absorber geometry, and the Load Control rear suspension system. K-Series pickups also featured an off-road oriented design, with the transfer case bolted directly to the transmission and running gear tucked up as high as possible under the vehicle to reduce the chances of snagging vital components on obstacles, as well as to achieve a low silhouette and optimal ground clearance. Exposed brake lines were wrapped in steel as standard.
Full-time four-wheel drive pickups featured a two-speed New Process 203 transfer case with center differential and lock. Five positions were provided: High Loc, High, Neutral, Low, and Low Loc. In High the center differential was unlocked and allowed the front and rear propeller shafts to slip as needed for full-time operation. The system could be manually shifted into High Loc which locked the center differential for a locked 50:50 torque split. Low and Low Loc applied reduction gearing with or without lock, depending on the mode selected. Neutral was also available for use of the PTO.
Fenderside models came with rigid, double-wall cab construction features side steps located between the rear fender and cab back that permit easy side loading and cargo handling for both work or recreation. The 6.5ft box is equipped with standard wood floors that provide good footing for livestock and permit nail-downs to help prevent cargo shifting. Smooth interior walls are ideal for many applications. Seven flush steel skid strips hold the wood floor in place yet allow for expansion with changes in temperature and humidity. A tight fitting tailgate helps keep bulk loads in the box. Reinforced stake pockets, for the addition of stake racks, are standard.
The High Sierra model included seats trimmed in custom cloth and vinyl with a full-foam seat cushion and folding backrest. Additional interior equipment included: cigarette lighter; extra sound insulation; dome lamp with door-operated switches; color-keyed carpeting; and molded door trim panels with simulated chestnut appearance wood grained appliques and vinyl storage pockets. Also included is a color-keyed molded headliner with insulator. Exterior equipment included: bright front bumper; High Sierra emblems on front fenders; and bright windshield and rear window moldings. Also included are a bright cab back panel applique and bright metal hubcaps plus bright upper body side moldings.
LET'S TALK ABOUT BLACKY…
This 1977 SWB (117.5”) Fenderside half ton has been with the same family since 1996. The vehicle was gone through several years ago. From the first glimpse, this vehicle is a step back in time. The paint appears to have seen a respray, is deep, and in good condition with a high gloss finish. The 6.5ft step side box has standard wood floor in very good condition. You’ll find 5 spoke wheels resting on white lettered Trail King A/T tires. Moving into the interior you first notice the blood red seats and interior trim. The door cards and dash are in good condition and reflect the age of the vehicle. The carpets, seats and headliner are all in excellent condition and have obviously been in the hands of a proper upholstery shop.
The instrument cluster and gauges appear to be working properly and knowing the engine has seen a few uprated items installed, you’ll find a separate oil pressure and water temp gauge under the front fascia panel. Speaking of the engine, under the hood you’ll find a 350 V8. Your eyes are immediately drawn to the Edelbrock Pro-Flo chrome air cleaner resting atop a menacing Demon 750 carburetor . The shiny Moroso chrome valve covers are parked around an Edelbrock performer intake manifold. We know there’s an aggressive cam in the vehicle, but do not know the model. Blacky is also equipped with full time 4wd and locking front hubs.
