1952 M38, introduced by Willys in 1950, a post-WWII Jeep based on the civilian CJ-3A and fitted with military-specific features, including a one-piece foldable windshield, bottom-mounted wipers, a pintle hook for towing, lifting shackles, and a fuel filler on the drivers side. Pioneer
tools (axe and shovel) were mounted on the passenger side. The larger (7:00X 16) tires were used. It has a waterproof 24 volt electrical system, requiring a second battery. The M38 suspension and frame are stronger than that of its civilian sibling (the CJ-3A) with a full-floating
rear axel.
Other distinctive features of the M38 include protruding headlights (with brush guards in the front). It has an air vent in the base of the windshield, blackout running lights and mounts for various tools. A few M38s were equipped with Ramsey winches. The jeep had a net weight of 2,745 lbs. Some M38s were outfitted with wading equipment and a special breathing apparatus to allow for fording in streams.
Winterization packages for some M38’s included a hard top, all metal enclosure, “the Arctic Cab”
The instrument panel of the M38 was an exercise in simplicity, just as its predecessors had been, only with an easily removable cluster panel.
The instruments were located on an easily removable panel at the center of the dash, with external lighting. The data plates are on the right side of the dash, and a glove box is at the extreme right. To the left were the choke and throttle cables, with the light switch just left of the steering column, and at the far left the parking brake handle is mounted in the dashboard.
The M38 continued in production until 1952, when the M38-A1 became the “standard” model of military service, until it went out of production in 1957.
This particular jeep is part of a large collection of early Willys jeeps which were put into storage over 40 years ago, and are just now being offered for sale. It was running and drivable when stored, however it has not been started for many years. I purchased this jeep in 1968, over 50 years ago. It was used in many Veterans Day parades, and air shows until I retired it and put it in storage, where it has remained until now.
This jeep is unrestored and completely original. It has its original body which is solid with no dents. It has the original 24 volt electrical system, 4 cylinder (4-134 L head) engine, 3 speed trans with a Warn aftermarket overdrive, (not original equipment, but helps the jeep go faster), and 4x4 high-low transfer case. It has it's original olive drab paint. There's only 27960 miles on the odometer.
This jeep is located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Shipping will be the responsibility of the buyer. We will aide in any way we can to get it loaded. Payment is due within 7 days of the end of auction, unless other arrangements are made with seller, prior to the end of the auction.
