----After buying it on eBay in 2012, ten years later I reluctantly sold this car at auction on Bring a Trailer dot com, which is typically the best site to find these rare gems, on 10.28.22 (you can still look up that auction up on their site and see all the details) to help pay for my wife's new car...but, completely without my approval or any knowledge whatsoever...my mother intervened in secret behind my back, bid on my BaT auction, won, and paid me the winning sale price, simply because she knew how much I love this car and wanted to enable me to keep it. She broke BaT's rules, so they won't let me relist it. I've driven it ever since, but now I'm buying a new truck, and it's time to finally part with my beloved 240 wagon. This time, my mother is guaranteed not to intervene!! Believe me, she and I have TALKED about it AT LENGTH. Yowza.
· Anyway, not counting a heavily modified wagon that sold for nearly $60K, the last seven 1993 5-speed manual Volvo 240 wagons sold at BaT (2019-2024) averaged more than $12.5K, and now...fewer and fewer are listed anywhere for sale.
----For many reasons listed above, I think this car is pretty special...even unique among the rarest of the rare...it's arguably the very last of its kind and a true Volvo unicorn, but again, I have a new truck on the way and must part with it.
----Extensive maintenance/upgrade invoices and receipts, most prior to my ownership (and all since) are included.
----Thanks for your interest! I'm happy to answer any questions. I've been on eBay since 1999 and always do my very best to make this a great platform to swap cool stuff and handle everything honestly and above board, as a buyer or seller!
----I'm not a car dealer, just a guy who loves old Volvos and is finally parting with my last and most favorite because of that new truck I ordered. After this, I really hope I won't have to buy or sell another vehicle for decades!
----Here's a summary of what I've done to this car over the years I've owned it (since late 2012), and when each service occurred, backed up in writing by a folder full of all my service records and receipts that will come with the car:
1993 VOLVO 240/245 CLASSIC LIMITED 5-SPEED MANUAL WAGON
VIN# YV1AW880XP1960611: INVESTMENT LOG
(#1398 of the final 1,600 Volvo 240 cars ever built)
(maintenance/upgrade receipts, most prior to my ownership and all since, included with auction)
Full disclosure: I am the third owner of this car and over the last nearly 14 years have invested plenty of love (and maybe too many dollars if you ask my wife) into the purchase, upgrade and meticulous care of this splendid wagon, my white whale, or as she calls it, "the other woman."
In 2012, I purchased it (via eBay) from the seller, who was the second owner, who only owned it briefly and had purchased the car a few months earlier in 2012 from his NJ neighbors (the original owners who special-ordered it from their Volvo dealer in 1993). He intended it for his teenage son, who immediately rejected it, so he sold it to me after only a few months of ownership, and it was with the original family (who ordered it) from 1993-2012. I flew up from TN to meet him and drove it straight home. I'd planned to stop in between and spend a night somewhere, but this car is made for the highway and just devoured the miles, and driving it felt like home anyway (as I'd owned one before), so I only stopped for gas and caffeine.
A few years later, I beat that feat and set my forever road-trip record in this car, driving it from East Tennessee to Kansas City (and back) with a one-hour stop in the middle, to pick up some furniture (also bought on eBay). That was a 26-hour drive, and the car performed absolutely beautifully. I, however, did not, and will never try anything that stupid again.
This “classic limited” series consisted of the final 1,600 240-series Volvos ever manufactured, 800 of which were wagons (or 245s) and 800 of which were sedans. Having owned Volvos previously and knowing that the 240 series was being discontinued, the neighbors of the guy I bought it from had special-ordered this one in 1993 for the final model year, requesting a manual transmission and adding an electric sunroof, which I later replaced, making an already rare model perhaps even unique among the last 800 wagons ever built.
I grew up driving Volvo 240s, learned to drive on one, went on a massive cross-country trip with my dad in one, and have owned three. This one is by far the best, my favorite, the crown jewel in my collection, and the last one I have left. I still love it and still rely on it as my regular driver but have decided to replace it with a new truck, so it’s really, finally, got to go to a new home.
I hope someone has been searching for one like it for years (as I looked for 12 years before finding it myself), and will take meticulous care of it as I did and as I have, as I believe it is truly unique. I don't know how many of those final 800 Classic Edition wagons were five-speed manuals, but I doubt that many of them were. Probably none of those had a power sunroof and all the OEM Volvo dash gauges (and 5 Turbo Virgos, let's face it, the best of all OEM Volvo rims).
If I were a younger version of me and found this car, I'd simply fix the paint, as that's all it really needs. Otherwise, just drive it and change the oil and rotate the tires every 5K miles, like I did. Occasionally things come up, and you can either tinker with it yourself or find someone who does it professionally, as I always have. I'm actually jealous of whomever starts this new era with this fine machine but also happy to pass it along to someone who will really enjoy it.
What follows is a log of what I’ve bought for it and paid to have fixed on it over the years, along with the dates I had it done at various garages, as I am not a mechanic...and at middle age have reluctantly accepted once and for all that it just makes more sense for me to have a newer vehicle...and I want a new pickup, so that's what I'm going to get.
11/30/12
25-tooth replacement odometer gear: The odometer stopped sometime between 2008 and 2012, during which I understand the car was replaced with a new vehicle by the original owners, who couldn't bare to let it go so they garaged it and rarely drove it in those last few years until the original-owner husband finally convinced his wife (who was very attached to the car) to let it go to their neighbor--who promptly sold it to me after his kid didn’t want it.
Based on mileage logged in regular maintenance records and testimony from the original owners, some of which I have, the second owner and I guesstimated the mileage at somewhere between five and 10 thousand miles above what the odometer showed at the time of my 2012 purchase, when it was showing 108K miles, so our best guess then placed it around about 115K actual miles. I promptly had the odometer gears fixed, and then fixed again later in 2019, a soon as it stopped once more. So, like most of these old Volvos, it's had the plastic-geared odometer parts repaired a couple times and as such it's considered TMU or True Mileage Unknown, but again, conservatively, I suspect it's only got 10K to 15K more than what it shows, and as people tend to say about these cars, it's "just getting broken in." Odometer and trip odometer are fully functional, and again were promptly repaired soon after I got the car in 2012 and again promptly when it stopped again in 2019, and I've just recently hit 202,000.

SALE ON BRING A TRAILER: After agonizing over it, I decided to sell the car, as we’re getting my wife a new car and thought we’d try to get by with one vehicle for a while. To my COMPLETE surprise, my mom anonymously bid and won the auction at Bring a Trailer dot com, allowing me to keep the car and giving me the money as a gift to us both. Whoah, that really blasted me sideways out of the blue. I definitely did not see that coming and am still trying to get my head around it. I suppose that at this point I’ll either keep the car forever or try to explain what happened to BaT in the event I’ll want to try to sell it again, someday. Who knows? Part of me is angry with her for reversing the decision I had agonized over for so long and breaking BaT rules behind my back, but another part of me is just grateful for such a loving gift. I told BAT what happened and asked them about relisting the car for sale. They didn’t ban me from the site but did not allow me to relist this car. Can’t blame them, really. Family isn’t supposed to bid, so what my mom did broke their rules, and they have to maintain a legitimate site for auctions, even though I had no idea and had nothing to do with it. So…I’m keeping the car for now…
10/28/22
At 195K miles, oil change and tire rotation (oil-temp sender unit at drain plug could be causing very tiny/slow oil leak, added Teflon and it stopped). Tire pressured up to 36PSI all around. Replaced battery; eliminated check-engine light with mysterious 144 code. New spark plugs.Added two new front-wheel brake cover/dust shields that had always been missing. Fixed driver-side interior door handle. Freon was empty after two years; replaced, blowing coldest air yet. Replaced brake light bulbs. Next time brake light are replaced, might try to find stock housings and consider new “integrity relay” with the LED bulbs.
9/9/23
Replaced the decade-old JVC set of 200W backseat-door speakers with a new set of Memphis 5.25” SRX52 “street reference” coaxial speakers, 100W. They also removed the wired external mic from the Sony deck, as it was just in the way.
9.19.23
In a pinch, instead of going to my longtime trusted Volvo guy out of town, I got work done nearby at another shop in town. Big mistake. New tie rods, replaced rack and pinion/power steering rack, new steering bellows and alignment.
11.6.23
The R&P unit the last garage installed leaked, so I got free replacement and had it installed at my trusted Volvo specialist, out of town. Wish I would have in the first place! He re-did the job all over again for less than half the price, and this time did it right! R&P unit filled with ATF.
12.27.23
Two new PIAA wipers (windshield) and Bosch wiper (rear cargo door)
2.13.24
At 199,500 miles, oil (synth 5W30) and filter change and tire rotation, new throttle body gasket, two new front brake rotors, new front brake pads, one RF caliper B line, new brake fluid, new coolant temperature sensor, throttle body cleaner, PCV hose, rear wiper nozzle and right B pillar trim replacement. Check engine light was throwing CODE 144, which includes 7 or 8 possibilities, which puzzled my Volvo guy, but he cleared it and drove it and all appears well. Brake shudder at 40+ MPH now fixed by the new rotors, high quality branded.
6.14.25
At 199,880 miles, some occasional delayed start issues with turning over but not engaging prompted my Volvo guy to check the fuel pump relay switch (which he typically replaces every decade on 240s), only to discover that mine was original, from 1993! He’d never seen that before and replaced it.Also, because I could tell the aim was off (and people kept flashing their lights at me, thinking my brights were on), I’d long suspected that the local place installed the new headlights improperly a few years back. They did. My Volvo guy said they were “way off” and adjusted them to hit the road in front of the car as they should. It's been running great ever since...
WINNING BIDDER: Per eBay policy, I must receive the $500 deposit via eBay/PayPal within 48 hours of auction end, at which point we can connect to arrange the wire transfer of the remaining balance, unless buyer elects to pay via eBay's Caramel services. Once I confirm receipt of the remainder in full via wire transfer into my account, we can meet for pickup of the vehicle and title transfer...and you will agree in good faith to love and cherish and take superior care of my 33-year-old baby... because she deserves it. :D Hey, thanks for reading all this!
