Introduced as Volvo's final P1800 variant, the 1800ES is a two-door station wagon with a frameless, all-glass tailgate. Debuting for the 1972 model year, the 1800ES only survived for two years and was the only vehicle produced by Volvo for the 1973 model year. In Sweden, the P1800ES was nicknamed Fiskbilen (the Fish Van); in Germany and Switzerland it was nicknamed Schneewittchensarg (Snow White's coffin), because of the all-glass rear hatch. Nearly as lovely as the coupe, the 1800ES is a successful version of the sports wagon theme.
Displayed here is a 1972 Volvo 1800ES that bears a red over tan color scheme. Although this might be considered a somewhat funny looking vehicle by any American standard, this station wagon is as unique as it appears. The large oval grille, long front nose, and station wagon body style are styling cues that will always turn heads. The bright red paint and subtle chrome accents shine, and would show well at any car show. The large all-glass rear hatch is amazing and quite the innovative engineering feature.
Inside the cabin you will find a tan interior that has been offset with black accents. The front bucket seats are clean, although there are some signs of aging/wear on the headliner, kick panels, and carpeting in the front foot wells as well as the rear cargo area. The rear bench does fold flat displaying quite an expansive rear cargo area. The black dash and leather wrapped steering wheel do show some slight wear from age, but are not cracked to the point of needing replacement. At some point, a previous owner has updated the vehicle with an aftermarket stereo.
Under the hood is a 1986cc inline 4-cylinder engine that has been combined with a 4-speed manual transmission which has overdrive. The engine compartment looks to be original and complete with typical evidence of engine use. It is noted that this vehicle currently shows 96k miles, but we are not able to confirm if these are original. Included in the sale of this vehicle are Volvo rubber floor mats, and a handful of spare parts from the previous owner.
Although the regular P1800 was more common during its time, it is extremely cool to see this wagon on the open market. If you are looking for a rare, unique, one-of-a-kind vehicle, this station wagon is perfect for you. It is unknown when another P1800ES will be available for sale, and we encourage anyone to come check this one out in person. Please call if interested or e-mail with specific questions. Thank you for looking.
