It took everyone by surprise when it arrived in 1961 because Volvo was considered a sober Swedish automaker known to most Americans for plain-looking, rugged family cars.Marketed as a stylish touring car rather than a sports car, the car was presented to the public for the first time at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1960. Volvo introduced the 1800 line in 1961 as a way to compete against European (and especially British) automakers in the sports car segment in the U.S. The idea was that it would offer luxury-caliber performance and styling at an affordable price. A series of cheeky advertorials ("It's sort of a souped-down Ferrari") bolstered the concept, but it was the car's mixed-European good looks that proved most compelling.The P1800 received prominence in the early 60's when a white 1962 Volvo P1800 with number plate ST1 was driven by the character Simon Templar (Roger Moore) in the hit TV series The Saint (1962--69).
