Very good condition. At 233,000 the paint isn't perfect but it's not faded, and there are random dimples and such with the tiniest amount of surface rust where the paint is chipped (easily remedied with some touch-up which I will hopefully do by the time I sell it). But there is absolutely no rust underneath. The interior is excellent -- a couple of dash cracks and the back of the passenger seat has a small tear (I have the repair kit, I hope to get it done by the time anyone looks at the car), and the rear parcel shelf has faded from the sun.
Here are the high points:
1. Runs like an absolute top.
2. Power windows
3. Heated seats (but I must say I never tried them out so don't know if they work)
4. Power mirrors
5. Manual sunroof
6. Nice JVC AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo with USB connection, auxiliary input, and detachable faceplate
7. Cold A/C -- a previous owner had it converted to R134a using all original (not aftermarket) Volvo parts
8. Recent tires
9. The fan is GOOD (this is a common problem with 240s, and an expensive fix).
10. ABS brakes and driver's airbag
11. Cloth interior
12. Did I say it runs like a top?
I have the car maintained by local Volvo Guru here in Murfreesboro, TN. He knows Volvos (newer and older) in and out and is familiar with this car if you want to call him(615-895-0910). According to him here are some issues that need to be addressed:
1. Rear control arms (he quoted me a price of $200 for the pair)
2. The brakes squeal and clunk once in a while, but Ken assures me it's from the non-Volvo brake pads that the previous owner installed. I'm serious about maintaining my cars so I promise you if the brakes or anything else was bad, I would fix it or at least note it here. Ask Ken about it if you like.
3. The warning light for the head and tail lamps has a faulty relay, so sometimes it stays on. But all front and rear work lights perfectly (I actually just replaced the left rear tail light assembly).
4. The cruise control doesn't appear work.
5. If you AutoCheck or CarFax it, you will see an odometer discrepancy between 107,000 and 123,000 miles. That IS not due to a rollback -- I ade sure of that before I bought it. it was recorded incorrectly.
I love this car -- if you are reading this then you know that the 240 is the car that secured Volvo's reputation as a maker of safe, durable, reliable, and long-lasting automobiles (even though that rep has changed for the worse with new and more advanced models!), and it is considered somewhat of a classic. The beauty about them and the secret to their longevity and toughness is their simplicity and "honesty." But I'm moving out of Tennessee and need a small van, wagon, or even pickup that can haul my gear and in which I can fit a dog crate (so that's a possibility for a trade). Otherwise I wouldn't hesitate to drive it across country (which is where I'm moving to).
The car is listed elsewhere for sale, so I reserve the right to end this listing early.
