1966 Volvo 122s. 4 cylinder, 1800cc, B18. 4 speed manual. Numbers matching car was originally sold by Copeland Motor Cars in Hampton, VA. The career Air Force school owner purchased in 1981. Current 3rd owner bought the vehicle in 2005 and had it restored over the next 2 years. Engine, suspension, brakes and cooling system were rebuilt by a well-respected and experienced Volvo mechanic who began his career the year the car was built. Had a new radiator, clutch, pressure plate and slave cylinder installed along with ball joints, tie rods, bushings, bearings, brake pads and shoes wheel cylinders, etc.
Body was solid with 2 tiny rust spots behind rear wheel wells; also had (and still has) some small patch repairs on floor board and repair of trunk floor passenger side. Glass and trim were removed, body stripped to bare metal, body work completed, then repainted in a softer mid-70's GM blue, rather than the Volvo code 89 Horizon blue. New windshield, rubber seals for windows, doors, trunk and lights and new stainless side trim were installed. Car has always been stored during the winters and not purposely driven in the rain. The paint still looks very good with a few minor chips.
Interior was completely redone in quality black leatherette, including the headliner, duplicating the original upholstery. Dashpad was replaced and the floor carpeted. Owner installed Sony radio/cd player and did enlarge the dash opening to accommodate placement.
Restoration was finished off with the ipd Superlite wheels and Goodyear Assurance 185/15 radial tires in 2008.
Included in the sale are about $1000 worth of new upgrade parts that were purchased later, but not installed, including front and rear ipd heavy duty sway bar kits, a complete set of Bilstein shock absorbers, front and rear progressive lowering coil springs from Vintage Performance Developments to replace the tired 51 year old originals and a key/lock set for both doors and the trunk.
Also included are many original and extra parts including wheels, hubcaps, beauty rings, rear fold-out windows and more that owner has probably forgotten. The original warranty, owner's manual and the complete Volvo shop service manual are part of the package.
Mileage is unknown. Odometer is nearing 51,000, but according to warranty/service record, the vehicle had over 71,000 miles in July of 1972. Vehicle has been driven less than 10,000 miles since 2005.
Car is not perfect, but it is a very nice, fun driver. It could stand to be refreshed and driven more.
The steering gear seal needs to be replaced, but included in the sale is an extra steering box that could have the seal replaced, then swapped out. Understand this is a common problem with 65-66 models and boxes were routinely filled with grease.
