What we have here is a 1985 DL Volvo 244 sometimes considered a 240, in good running condition and only 115,000 miles. 2.3L 4-popper. Automatic with overdrive (4-speed). This is a 2 owner car. My parents bought it in ’88 with about 27k miles on it from the Volvo dealer in Boulder. At the time of purchase they had them put in a limited-slip, posi-traction differential which is quite rare in these, plus a small factory tachometer. There was originally a clock in the dash which went bad a few years ago, and I tried to replace the clock with a full-size tach, at which time I could never get it to work plus the dash lights haven’t worked since.
The Good: A strong running engine and drive train which goes amazing in snow with the good studded snow tires and the posi-track. Steers and brakes fine. A smooth quiet ride, with no bad squeaks or rattles. Original Volvo AM-FM cassette works. Good glass. Good title, currently registered, and insured.
The Bad: Air Conditioner hasn’t worked for about 10 years, and the compressor has been removed. The dead dash lights. The Fuel gauge not working (just set the trip odometer and fill-up at about 200 miles). The temp gauge not working (never over-heats). And the heater fan motor which screams like a banshee with a wild hair when the temp is 20*F or lower, but is fine when warmed up.
The Ugly: Very oxidized paint, some missing molding, light scratches and scrapes, surface rust on doors, only rust-through is rear quarters behind wheels, plus the hood was crumpled but flattened out nicely, but now the hood has a bad hinge and is tricky to open and close (sometimes). Rear tail light lenses cracked and epoxied. Interior is basically good with no tears or rips, some cracked plastic parts.
So, who would want this? Someone who would love an older Volvo for basic transportation, which is drivable as is, but needs a some TLC. Someone who would like to pimp this out and make a radical crazy ride, or a rat rod. Someone needing a good parts car with low mileage parts. The posi rear is very sought after. I was actually thinking of stripping off all the chrome, painting it flat black or primer, then put big wheels and studded tires on it, and go ice racing.
