1987 Volvo 760 Turbo Intercooled with only 45,700 actual miles! Ultimate survivor car.
The Volvo 760 was delivered with two engines from the factory. The far more common 760 GLE used a 2.8 liter 135 horsepower V6, while the rarer 760 Turbo Intercooled used a 2.3 liter 4 cylinder turbocharged engine making 182 horsepower, and it can go from 0-60 mph in under 8 seconds, incredibly quick for a luxury car in 1987.
This Volvo was a North Carolina car that was stored covered in a garage for 17 years. 8 years ago, the car was trucked to Michigan in a move, and it was stored at the new home, which is why the car has only 45,700 miles on it. This averages out to only 1,600 miles per year! This Volvo has never seen any snow.
Everything is completely original on the car, from the exhaust system to the wiper blades. The original paint is in perfect condition, and the fragile factory pin striping is also perfect, because the car has not been in the sun, which often causes the pin striping to deteriorate.
The car is in extraordinary condition! Because the car has been covered, and not in the sun for 28 years, the dashboard is perfect, and has no cracks. Carpeted floor mats have been used since day one, so the carpet look like they did on the showroom floor. The leather seats are also in wonderful condition. Connolly Hide Food was used on the seats when the car was brought out of storage, and continues to be used today to nourish the leather.
Great care was taken to keep the car totally original. The windshield wiper blades had been changed by the original owner back in the day, but fortunately, he kept the original Bosch arms. Wiper blade refills were sourced through Mercedes Benz, which use the same arms, and the original blades are not being used.
The original amplifier for the original Volvo premium sound system, made by Alpine, did not work correctly when the car was pulled out of storage. The cassette head unit, which puts out only line-level power, and the factory graphic equalizer, which is also unpowered, worked perfectly, as does the power antenna. The amplifier was removed, and sent to Texas, where it was repaired, and returned. The audio now works perfectly.
The climate control system also did not work correctly when the car was pulled out of storage. The car was taken to Crippen Volvo in Lansing, Mi for service. The program controller, which distributes vacuum to the climate control system, was determined to have gone bad. A NOS program controller was eventually located, and installed at the dealership. Once the new program controller was installed, the system was evacuated, and the compressor oil was drained and replaced with oil for use with R134a. Various fittings were replaced, and the system was filled with R134a. The climate control system now can be serviced with modern freon. The automatic climate control system now works perfectly, you simply set a temperature on the dash to the desired temperature. A photo has been included to show the repair being made, and how incredibly clean under the dashboard is.
The Volvo is equipped with both front and rear fog factory lights, which are factory, and controlled from the dash. H-3 bulb was burned out, so both bulbs were replaced with LED bulbs, which give a brighter, whiter light, in addition to using less energy.
The 760 is equipped with a factory Nivomat self-leveling suspension, which works perfectly.
The headliner will need to be replaced, which is extremely common for these cars. I was finally able to get new material the headliner in the correct fabric, which is charcoal blue, and only has a foam backing 1/8” thick, instead of the more common 1/4” to 3/8” thick. The new material is included with the car.
The vinyl covering for the driver’s side rear door has also come unglued at the top, which is also a common issues for these car. This can be easily re-glued when the headliner is being replaced.
1987 was also the last year of the live axel, which can easily handle over 300 horsepower. The factory “redblock” is one of the series of non-interference engines, which means that if a timing belt breaks, the engine is not destroyed. The car has an AW-71 four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, and is equipped with an overdrive lockout button on the shifter which provides engine breaking when going through mountains, or towing a trailer. (It also can be used to improve acceleration by keeping the turbocharger boost higher, but that is just a side-effect… :-) ) The rear end is a Dana factory “locker”, commonly described as a “Detroit locker” which locks both rear wheels equally and acts as a spool, which helps acceleration on a high-horsepower car.
The engine oil was also flushed, and the oil was replaced with Royal Purple oil at 40,000 miles, and has been changed twice in the 5,000 miles since I have owned the car. The oil filter was switched to a Purolator designed specifically for synthetic oil.
The original Volvo, Turbo, and Intercooled emblems were pulling away from the trunk and were removed, but are in excellent condition, and are included.
Ephemera included with the car car includes the original owner’s manual in the original Volvo case, a operate manual and instructions for the Volvo premium sound system, the original Volvo “On Call” metal key fob (number 6638) with the all of the original literature that came with the car. There is a special cassette storage case that is located in the front console under the the arm rest, the original Alsop cassette cleaning cartridge in the original Volvo case.
This car is ready to be used and enjoyed by the next owner. It is quick, silent except for the whine of the turbocharger, and very luxurious for a 1987 car, and has central locking, which also automatically locks the trunk, heated seats with a power driver’s seat, heated side view mirrors, a factory premium sound system with equalizer. The car has factory anti-lock brakes, and the fluid has been changed with new ATE dot 4 fluid.
This car can be entered in the “most original” class at most car shows, or can just be driven like a new “old” car. These cars are regularly driven more that 250,000 miles, and will provide trouble-free motoring enjoyment.
The car is advertised on several Volvo specialist sights around the world, and may be sold at any time.
