1984 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Westfalia Camper Model P27 Additional Info:
We are the second owner (owned since 1987). Maintenence records are included. The Vanagon was used as a daily driver for about three years then we used the van occasionally as a spare vehicle. It has been in storage on and off for several years. The engine was started and the oil was changed while the vehicle was in storage. The dealer rebuilt the heads at 50,000 miles. The exterior was refinished one time in the late 90's while a dent in the left side panel was being straightened. The van is on its second clutch. For those not familiar with a Westfalia let me describe. This is a water cooled motor (not air cooled). This has sleeping for four once the top is popped open (that takes 30 seconds). The factory built this van for camping so there is a built in water reservoir and supply port for fresh water, a sink with a dish drying shelf, a two burner propane stove and a three way refrigerator. The interior has a 110vt outlet. There are lots of storage cabinets including a short clothes hanging bar. The van includes all window curtains along with a modesty curtain to block of the driver's compartment. The lift gate opening includes a full detachable screen. There are also screens in the side sliding Windows. What is reasonably new: in the last 300 miles the van has received a set of tires (Yokahama Super Van 356),new front rotors, pads, calipers and a master brake cylinder. How's is the body: the oiled doors have held up real well with no perforation of the doors. We are seeing some perforation at the rocker steps at the front doors and the wheel lips behind the rear tires. There is possible perforation at the lower corner of the windshield. The lower body seams are showing some surface rust in various degrees. Heavy rust scale below right quarter glass. The driver's door has a 4" dent. The mirrors and all windows are intact and free of cracks or deep scratches. I have not used the rear window defroster in years. Two 14" factory wheel covers remain. How's the canvas, upholstery and interior: the pop top canvas is very good. There are Holes in the top screen. The sun roof was replaced once and shows some haze. All of the upholstery is original and free of holes or any signs of excessive wear. Minimal fading. Some cloth staining may be present. The vinyl covered door trim panels are beginning to peel. How's the mechanicals: the A/C compressor is included but has been unbolted from the van. This engine starts easily and runs strong but does develope a higher idle speed once the motor is warmed up. A battery is included. The new front brakes were super until the brake pedal went soft the following season. The next owner will need to attend to the brakes. I am recommending the buyer tow the vehicle after purchase. The 1984 was a water cooled motor. The alternator and oxygen sensor light are on. The cassette radio works but the volume control is sensitive. A few extra parts are included along with a rear axle removal socket. How is the camping equipment: the internal switch for the fresh water pump has been replaced with a toggle switch. The pump in the reservoir needs replacement. I have not used the fridge or stove in years, the propane tank should be inspected. With some mechanical work this vehicle can be enjoyed this summer or the buyer could do a restoration. This vehicle goes under my 7' high garage door in case you would like to park the van indoors. Vehicle is being sold as-is. Buyer is responsible for vehicle pick up in Steubn County, Lake James, Angola, Indiana 46703. A tow at the buyer's expense is recommended.
