1984 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI * ABA Crossflow Swap * 02A 5-Speed * Quaife LSD
This 1984 VW Rabbit GTI is a long-term custom build originally completed in 2006 and garage stored since. The car was built with intention, quality components, and professional fabrication rather than as a quick swap project. I've owned it since 2004 and have driven it less than 1000 miles since the rebuild was completed in 2005.
It has recently been refreshed and interior reassembled in preparation for sale. Interior needs a few parts i.e. vents, and some work to secure Mk3 instrument cluster.
This is a modified, enthusiast-oriented Mk1 - not a stock restoration and not a neglected project.
Drivetrain & Performance1995 ABA OBD1 Crossflow Engine Swap
02A 5-Speed Transmission
TDI Ring & Pinion
Quaife Limited Slip Differential
Borla Cat-Back Exhaust
The engine runs strong and pulls well. The 02A shifts properly and the Quaife LSD provides excellent traction and drivability.
The car was originally built for me by Thomas Sport Tuning (San Pablo).
Suspension & BrakesH&R Coilovers
NeuSpeed Rear Sway Bar & Front Lower Tie Bar
Rear Disc Brake Conversion
The car sits properly and feels composed. Suspension components were selected for balanced street performance rather than extreme track setup.
ExteriorReflex Silver Metallic paint (1999 VW color) - ALL rubber seals replaced during reassembly.
South African Citi Golf front and rear panel conversion
Upgraded headlights and taillights
Corrado BBS RM wheels (1-piece) painted gloss black with polished lip
Michelin tires
Paint was completed by Panel Craft. It presents well overall with minor chips and small imperfections consistent with age and being stored in active home garage. The car has been stored indoors for approximately 21 years.
No rust. California car.
InteriorFully retrimmed in black
Wool-style fabric upholstery with red stitching accents
Momo steering wheel
Custom seat base setup (Wedge Engineering compatible with Sparco Torino II style seat configuration)
Dashboard and ancillary panels recently refinished using SEM interior coating - not perfect.
Interior has been reassembled cleanly and presents well. Needs some pieces and some modifications to fit Mk3 cluster.
Mileage DisclosureIn 2004, when the car was delivered to Thomas Sport Tuning, the running and clean chassis with original 1.8L engine had 201,395 miles.
The rebuilt, ported and polished 2.0L ABA Crossflow was installed with 148,248 miles on the matching Mk3 cluster. The Mk3 cluster currently reads 148,833 miles (approximately 585 miles driven since rebuild completion).
Condition NotesThis vehicle is a modified classic and should be viewed as such.
It is best suited for an enthusiast who understands Mk1 platform builds and appreciates a properly executed ABA swap.
