1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia – Automatic – Mechanically Excellent
This is a mechanically excellent 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia with a rebuilt engine and transmission and extensive documented upgrades across all major systems. I am the third owner, and the van was one-owner until 2017. Since purchasing it in 2019, I’ve invested heavily in mechanical restoration, making it an extremely reliable driver and an ideal platform for continued restoration or immediate camping.
Mechanical Highlights (All Documented)Rebuilt 2.2L Digifant engine with new heads (installed at 165,700 miles)
Transmission fully rebuilt (same time as engine)
New cooling system components: radiator, GoWesty stainless coolant pipes, water pump, thermostat housing
Fuel system overhaul: all new fuel lines, injectors, filter, and puma
Brakes: complete rear brake overhaul + new master cylinder
Drivetrain: new CV joints/boots, suspension ball joints, right rear wheel bearing
GoWesty transmission cooler installed
Electrical updates: ignition switch bypass (push-button start)
New starter
New power steering pump
New radiator
Thule roof rack + Fiamma-style awning installed
Routine oil changes and maintenance with records
The van runs strong and drives reliably. The classic Westfalia interior is intact and functional, showing normal wear for its age. The kitchenette is complete: the stove works, and the sink and original propane refrigerator are present but have not been tested. The pop-top opens manually; the hydraulic assist (H-bar) is broken.
Known Issues / TransparencyKitchenette partially functional
Some rust around window sills
Fuel tank dented/rusty
Propane tank rusty
Minor mildew on pop-top liner
Hydraulic pop-top assist inoperable (manual operation works)
Rear right seatbelt buckle missing
Smog / Emissions Note: This Vanagon is currently titled in Florida and located in California. I have a smog appointment scheduled for early the week of 01Dec and will update the listing immediately once the results are in.
California requires a smog certificate for local registration, but out-of-state buyers typically do not require a smog test, and the van can be registered normally in most states. Until the smog test is completed, the vehicle is being sold as-is, and buyers are responsible for determining emissions requirements in their state.
Thule roof rack
Fiamma awning
Stainless fasteners on shore hookups
Offset window cranks
