1961 Volkswagen Beetle - Classic Additional Info:
This is an all original 1961 VW Bug in excellent condition. I am the third owner; there was a dealer between me and the original owner. The speedometer shows 85790 miles which is thought to be the original miles for this VW.My wife and I bought a new 1961 bug and took it on our honeymoon. In those days, after you purchased a bug you waited 6 months to take delivery. When you purchased you had to declare three color choices. When your vehicle came off the ship, if it was one of your three, it was yours. We selected red, blue and green in that order. Our new 61 bug was, of course, green. There were 177,308 1961 bugs sold in the U.S., showing its popularity. We finally got our red bug 10 years ago with the idea of taking it on our 50th anniversary. We took a rather long trip. Fortunately, wisdom overcame our nostalgia and we used our SUV for the trip. Nothing wrong with the bug, many things wrong with the old bodies that would occupy it.1961 saw some major chages in the bug. It was the first year of the 40hp engine and the first year of the syncromesh first gear. It was also the last year for no gas guage. It uses a valve down by your right foot that provides you with an additional 1.1 gallons of fuel. (a feature which I prefer to this day). This bug runs great. The radio works. All lights and signals work. It does NOT pop out of any gear. The window glass has no cracks, chips, or bubbles and all glass is original except for the windshield. The 5 tires are period correct Firestone whitewalls with less than 1000 miles on them. This little red bug is always popular at the car shows as many people remember their experiences with these fun cars. Some one asked if it leaks oil. Yes all these period bugs leaked a small amount of oil. The leak from this bug is VERY minor, but in the interest of full disclosure, it does leak a very small amount of oil (couple of drops a month).I don't think you will find a better running and stopping and shifting 61 bug out there. At age 75, it is time for someone else to enjoy our red bug.
