1970 Volkswagen Beetle - Classic Additional Info:

Up for auction is a red 1970 VW Beetle / Bug with an autostick. AS IS, WHERE IS, WITH ALL FAULTS.

My daughter drove this car for years as her high school and early college vehicle. Eventually, she acquired a modern car and parked the bug in the driveway. It has sat there for years and we went back and forth on whether she would reclaim the car as a driver but she doesn’t have the time or space to really own and drive the car so we’re auctioning it off.

Our family is the 2nd owner if you don’t count the small used car lot I found this vehicle on. It was sold to the lot by the original 1970 owners.

The good:

This car was a fantastic driver. The engine compression is great and it has several mild upgrades such as a Flamethrower points replacement, etc.

The engine turns freely and easily 360 degrees with a wrench on the generator nut. The car drove into its driveway space back in 2016!

It comes with lots of fun documentation from the original owners showing meticulous oil change records, dates, mileage, and lots more.

I’m an air-cooled bug person and the car was always maintained with regular oil changes, valve adjustments and a general “John Muir” style of love and care.

For those of you who have never driven an autostick, I have to confess that I was skeptical at first but once driven, an autostick is a blast! Read up on it if you don’t know how it works but essentially you get the fun and pleasure of driving a rear engined, air-cooled VW but with almost no shifting and no clutch!

The car hasn’t been “messed” with in terms of suspension lowering or weird customizations in any way. It still has its original radio, for example. My daughter drove it in the spirit of its original 1970 tech.

For those of you who love original docs and etc. this car comes with a lot of paperwork and odds and ends from the original owner.

When we bought the car, there was some rust in the front suspension that we had serviced at a VW shop with a welding repair.

The tires are old but with low miles.

The bad

The car has been sitting since the summer of 2016. The car had a mild water leak around the rear window that had evidence of a clumsy repair by the original owners or the car lot, I’m not sure. After the car was parked, the leak returned and this resulted in a water incursion that has rusted out parts of the pan so: THE CAR WILL NEED NEW PANS. The heater channels are also rusted. So…this car will not be driveable until the pans are renewed or replaced.

The ugly

The paint was not in great shape the entire time my daughter drove the car and it's no better now. The interior is mostly complete but beat but could easily be a part of a redo / restoration, etc. The car has expected surface rust on bumpers, small dings and dents here and there, etc. as it was used as a 'real car' and not a show car or antique back when my daughter drove it.

This car has stale/dead gas in the tank, a dead battery, rusted floor pans and brake drums that will need a tow from the driveway to start to turn as they seem stuck from sitting. Again, you will need to tow this car from its driveway spot to take ownership of it.
