Thank you for your interest. I’d like to start off by saying I am a professional VW restoration technician at a reputable restoration shop in Northern California, and am a well known long time VW enthusiast. All preservation and mechanical work on this car has been done by myself or other reputable VW shops. I hold all cars in my possession to a high standard, and I can easily say this is one of the nicest Quantum survivors in existence, and it has been a privilege to own such an incredibly rare and clean car.
INTRO:
This is a July of 1985 production Model 327 Quantum Sedan. A total of approx only 26,000 Quantum Sedans were sold in the US between 1982-1988. The exact number of surviving cars in existence today isn’t exactly known, but it is very low.
For those not familiar with Quantums, an info and specification sheet are pictured (and included) which describe the car’s features and explain the provenance. Please take a look and read carefully.
EXTERIOR:
The car is extremely straight and solid. It has always been garaged. The car has never been in an accident and there are no signs of body damage anywhere. The exterior is all original paint, Flash Silver Metallic.
Being 38 years old, there are some very minor scuffs and an occasional minor ding, some battle scars if you will, but nothing that detracts at all. The entire car was detailed and ceramic coated with a 5 year warranty, and it displays extremely well.
The original rims were blasted and powder-coated in their original silver finish for durability and a fresh clean look before being wrapped in new white wall tires.
Underneath, the chassis is super clean and dry. There is no signs of rust anywhere that I can find on the car. All window and door seals are all intact and in good shape and do not leak.
INTERIOR:
The interior is all original and in very minty condition. The seat upholstery is Silver ZigZag Velour, and is in extremely nice condition. There are no rips or tears.
The door panels are also in very nice straight shape with no damage or wear. The carpeting is all intact, clean, and not faded.
The headliner is super nice and clean with one very small snag that is barely noticeable. The dash is in very nice condition and not cracked. It has a brand new protective dash mat to help keep it that way.
MECHANICAL:
The engine is the original 1.6L Turbo Diesel with 175,000 miles. The engine runs great and produces a substantial increase in power over the non-Turbo version, making highway driving much more pleasant while still retaining an incredible fuel economy of 40+ MPG.
This car also has an auxiliary fuel tank and operational veggie oil/bio-fuel system made by Grease Car. It is operated via a switch on the center console and switches between running on diesel or veggie oil. A complete owners manual from Grease Car is included.
The transmission is the original 5 speed manual unit which shifts super smooth and perfect, with zero issues, and no grinding or popping out of gear.
The brakes feel great and work perfect. Tires are were brand new whitewalls that I installed in 2022 and still look brand new. Electrically, all lights and signals work as they should, along with the wipers, and original optional AM/FM radio also works.
As with any 38 year old car, there are bound to be little quirks here and there. The ONLY extremely minor issues with the car are the following:
A. Sometimes the door locks can stick and and don’t always lock on the first attempt. They always unlock no problem.
B. Sometimes the 2 rear windows don’t want to roll down. This is a common issue with the early power windows and is related to the contacts inside the switches on the center console. Both front windows work perfect.
C. The Air Conditioning is the original R12 system which was serviced last summer and blew perfectly cold, but shortly thereafter the compressor seized, so you would need another compressor. The heat works fine.
And finally, D. This issue stumped the previous owner, myself, and several other enthusiasts. Occasionally, the diesel glow plug light on dash will flash randomly when it’s hot outside. This does NOT affect the car’s drivability or starting. It will randomly flash for a minute, then stop. Then maybe start flashing again later. Everything has been inspected with no bad findings. Again, it does not affect the operation of the car, but is more of a minor annoyance. I would not be concernedwhatsoever. I have driven this car on many long distance trips (300+ miles each way) with ZERO issues.
THE DEAL:
This Quantum comes with the original dealership packet that contains the original owners manual, warranty booklet, and maintenance booklet. A ton of receipts for parts and labor over the years are included, as well as a log book going back 30 years which details info about fuel fill ups, mileage, and repairs. It also comes with the pair of period correct personalized license plates that are registered to the car.
This car went to EVERY VW show in NorCal last show season. It was quite the crowd pleaser, consistently winning many First Place awards as well as multiple specialty awards. This vehicle will no doubt remain a strong competitor in show. (Please Note: the awards shown/mentioned are not included with the sale as they are part of my portfolio.)
The Title is clean in my name, car is currently registered, and it is insured. As a diesel, no Smog is required.
I have tried to as accurately describe the car as possible. Car is sold as-is with no warranty. If you would like to schedule a viewing, test drive, or have any questions, please contact me.
International buyers are welcome, and I can help arrange shipping and deliver car to the shipper. Car is located in Berkeley, California.
