This bus has been amazing with tons of great memories. I bought this in 2020 as a pandemic project for my son and I. I bought it specifically because the body isn’t rotten like many of these buses. It’s an Original California Bus with Yellow & Blue Plates (I do have the front) This bus is ready to go anywhere. Starts, shifts, drives and stops as it should. Super reliable and most everything works (see below). I will work to explain everything in full but please ask any questions. I have a clean title in my name. All VINS are correct and it has both its VIN tag and the M-Code tag in place.
BODY – original paint (upper cumulus white/ bottom sea blue) with a heavy patina to it. When we received it, it had white house paint on it to ‘preserve’ it. We carefully stripped this off to find the original paint underneath. The only serious cancer rust was the front floor pans which we had replaced. There are some really small paint bubbles on the bottom front of the front doors, the cargo rocker panel and the battery tray area but they haven’t increased in the three years we’ve owned it. Everything else you see is surface rust. The cargo floors and all undercarriage are rust free. The roof and roof rails are all clean. The bulkhead had been cut out and we found an original 67 bulkhead which was aligned great and welded in but does need finish work if you want to ‘restore’ it. All doors and windows open/close as they should. It is a factory 11 window with side pop-outs bus and installed the safari windows up front. All original glass, lenses etc other than the safaris. Wind-wings do not latch, I only have the VW key for the ignition so NO door keys. There are dings and dents throughout the bus - nothing super nasty but it adds to its character. All doors and rear hatch open/shut as they should. The primer spots on the driver side cover repaired 3 holes from it being used prior as a camper (drains etc). They were welded/filled with metal and shot in primer to protect. If I kept it, I’d do some sort of a mural or my biz logo on that side.
MECHANICALS – The original 1500 (one year only) was rebuilt when we got it and runs great. We serviced the engine and the original transaxle with reduction boxes. Really minimal leaks anywhere. Installed a new clutch disc and cable. Removed and cleaned the gas tank with new sending unit – fuel gauge works great. Lubricated the shifting linkage and shifts great…no scratching, moaning or jumping out of gear. We rebuilt all the brakes…every component replaced with OEM caliber parts sourced from Wolfsburg West. Stops firm and straight. I had the steering link replaced, greased and aligned but it does have some ‘slack’ in the wheel while driving still. Nothing nasty but its not a brand new car.
ELECTRICAL - Original first year 12V bus. All electrical works as it should other than the rear turn signals. Front signals do work…weird. Interior/exterior lights, headlights, fog light, gauges and lights, speedo, charging system – all work like they should. It has an 8 track player that was installed at one point – does not work (I do have an original 67 dash insert that goes with the bus if it was restored). The horn also does not work.
INTERIOR – Clean and smells fine. Front seats were in it when I bought it. I installed the rear seat and floor. Has basic door panels but looks clean. 50 mil sound deadening mat - KILMAT - was applied to cargo walls/doors and the interior floor covering the engine. Headliner is original with multiple tears and fun stickers covering most slits and holes.
OTHER STUFF – Wheels and hubcaps are all original but I did repaint them both. I also repainted the front emblem. Bumpers are also painted but NOT restored. Dents/dings throughout the body…not razor straight for sure. Newer tires front and back. Seat belts installed front and back. Cool old stuff like the PEACE sign shift knob, hula girl and 8 track. Love how the sun baked some old sticker on the back and left ‘Belly Dancer’ in the paint. Includes a full All-Weather Car Cover from JBugs.
Would make an amazing lowered patina bus or have fun cruising it as is. Great entry point into a split window bus.
Bus sold as-is without warranty. Please hit me up with any other questions/pictures etc.
