You are bidding on a highly unique all original 1972 Volkswagen camper that sleeps 4 adults. This vehicle was modified under the direction of VW of America by Sportsmobile in 1972. It was purchased new from Wood Motors in Detroit, Michigan.
This rare, well cared for VW van is a Sportsmobile Penthouse with a screened in pop-up top that goes straight up. The pop up will accommodate two full size adults, while the pull out bed below will sleep two more. The Sportsmobile conversion was sold through Volkswagen dealers in the US. This is a rare example with virtually complete original interior furnishings. Includes original sales brochure from 1972.
This vehicle is in exceptionally good condition. It has been housed in a climate controlled garage for the last 28 years. It is a two owner vehicle. The seller is the second owner; it was originally purchased new in 1972 by a family member.
The vehicle has never been in an accident. There are several locations that have dents due to parking lot damage but the structural Integrity of the vehicle is 100% The drivers door was replaced and is not original to the vehicle.
When the vehicle was new it was completely undercoated with rust proofing by the Ziebart corporation. The under structure of the vehicle is unusually sound and rust free for a vehicle that's over 50 years old.
The original engine and transmission have been replaced with rebuilt units some years ago. The engine runs and the transmission is fair. The vehicle has current registration and tags and can be driven but it's not recommended without further repairs and adjustments.

The vehicle comes with an assortment of parts to be used in restoration. Front axle is from a 1974 VW Van which makes brake replacement easier as the 1972 front disk brakes were unique to that year.
BONUS: Comes with original yellow tent with striped roof. The tent attaches to the side opening of the van and provides bug-free outdoor space during rainy weather. Hasn't been put up in many years and may be a bit musty. It includes a complete set of poles and ropes to set up.
