1969 Volkswagen Beetle - Classic Additional Info:
Please note: if you buy-it-now without viewing this car, will reject the purchase.
My mechanic thinks selling this car is nutty because there are so few like it, ut we need a truck to pull a teardrop trailer and I have teenagers. call 626.862.1489
This '69 was first purchased in November 1968 from the now defunct Ed "The" Wissler dealership in Westminster, A. and this car has lived in SoCal ever since. When I bought this car, he owner (the 4th owner) had kept all the original repair receipts from previous and original family owners (father to son) starting in early 1969. Amazingly, oth original dealership day-glo orange paper advertising inserts were hidden behind the original dealer vanity frames (you also get The Wissler plate frames!). I have always garaged this car as have previous owners. The mileage is absolutely original based on all the receipts I have. When I bought it 3 years ago, t had 84,000 miles. The mileage was low because it was garaged by a collector for about 20 years and driven a few miles on weekends. I get 21 MPG.
This car has not been hit, recked, or have the original bumpers been struck. There are 4-5 minor dings on the body but nothing that can't be fixed before new paint is applied. You could keep the old paint, hich is original Diamond Blue and has chips/dings, nd wait for patina. No sun damage patina right now. I just replaced both fender boards and there was no rust on the frame. There is no rust beneath the battery. No rust holes anywhere.
This car runs and drives amazingly well. 70 mph all day long is easy. Heatand defrost work fine. Has electric defroster on the rear glass which still works. Has the original California Black Plate, ot the new black fakes (note that DMV started issuing the Blue Plates in January 1969). Title clear. The car has the original early California smog set-upattached tothe carb standwith a working "altitude adjuster". The original M type single port intake manifold is on the car. Original optional dealer bumper guards on bumpers front and rear. All glass is original VW except front windscreen. The car has the original rare true-to-1969 Satellite XAM/FM radio (radio needs rebuild).
Cars like this with original paint and no cutting are getting very very rare, hus the price. I do a valve adjustment every 3 months and oil change every 3,000 miles. Before I sell it, will give you new oil and a valve adjustment to .006 per the specs.
This car has all the original purchase receipts and the original manual.
The 1500cc engine and transmission are original. Slow downshift to 2nd (be careful). Reverse does not pop out. Compression is great and there is no smoke at all. No oil leaks to speak of as long as you replace the cork gaskets with new ones in the valve covers each time you adjust the valves. I also have a set of good used 1500cc heads with pistons plus the NOS rings for that size. When you rebuild, ou'd want to use this set to keep it 1500cc. You cant get the 1500cc rings any more. The car has good power and there is no need to go to some crazy oversized engine and flyer transmission.
I have replaced the following components to bring the car into reliable daily driver mode, rom latest to earliest. This car runs and drives like a champ.
New fender boards - German 18mm thick with black rubber.New white fender bead
New shifter and front shifter bushingNew steering damperNew brakesNew fuel pumpNew Brosol carb (I kept the original German Solex just in case). This carb is well tuned.New plugs
New correct size batteryNew Bosch coilNew clutchNew electronic distributor with mechanical vacuum advance (have an Original for the 1500cc engine but its worn out, nd I have the .009 I took off the car when I bought it), orks great.New headlights and bulbsNew interior fuel tank "condom" screen -- tank was completely cleaned out besidesNew starterNew starter circuit electricsNew generator (not installed)New steering wheel ringNew turn signal indicator (needs adjustment)New speedo cableNew black carpetingNew door rubber and vent window rubber all aroundNew rear plastic taillight assemblies (I have the originals) with rubber
New front turn signal assemblies with rubber
New front wheel bearingsNew shocks all aroundNew tires, ... (Montgomery Ward tires from 1980 were still on the car when I bought it, o I bought the correct radial tires for the wheel size)
The car needs a foam repack of the seats plus the original style black vinyl seat covers. Then it will be back to like new. Headliner is original and excellent. Radio should be rebuilt.
If you are out of state, ou could easily drive this home (but then you'd lose the classy California Black Plates).
